Ok, I have ran a backing plate on my front brakes for years on my toy junk, now that its GONe, and getting ready to build the new 44, my backing plates are a bit on the "rough" side.. How many of you are running no backing plates and having no problems???
I live up in the NW, where we have, a tad bit of rain..

You're talking bout the dust shields right? Havent run em in years. Never had a problem. Even in the summer monsoons in Tucson.

talk about a man who dosen't know(living in arizona), i've drivin in rain and if you don't run them, ride the brakes before you got to stop! rotors collect water like you wouldn't believe, til you got to stop. you never notice. helps to keep the water out. i run an autocross car that when i run no backing plates i almost have no brakes in panic situations because of the water. just my .02$ would'nt run no backing plates on my 4x, lots of wieght to plow into some innocient bystander:(

damn, the rig didn't have them dave, well bad me, i musta been too busy hackin on it (damn, didn't notice when i cut the old hooder rig up also) I must be getting old.. Thanks for the input so far guys, this is no street rig, so water will aways be on the rotors and can't see she shields doing any good except being able to be bashed, hey, kinda like the ones on the toy stuff, DOH!!
My rear disks also have no shields, and i can stop on a dime

stop on a dime in low range all you want. how a bout when your trailer brakes down? it happenens, so don't think you won't "ever have to drive it!" :p

When the trailer breaks down? 'Tis not hard to pull an axle and keep going...

 that has alot to do with "driving" your rig. trailers do break down, or is that rain filling your head? sorry we have tried to save a trailer on the way home and sometimes it just must be drivin.

i never have run them on my jeep. my previous axles had discs front and rear and it stopped in wet condidtions just fine. like stated earlier the dust sheilds just seem to trap mud. that is why i don't run them. this weekend i just swapped my 14bolt brakes to discs and no sheilds. not on the 60 front either. now if i can just get this tranny working right i can go try them out!!!!

I never put them on my axles I use and we have A LOT of rain around here and I never felt/saw any diff. in braking distances. I'm going disc all around this 4 Runner........I think it helps cool/vent the rotors and easy to clean after the mud runs..:p :D

You'd be suprised at the amount of rain that actually happens in Tucson. Summer monsoons mean over a foot of standing water in good chunks of the city.. so talk about a man who doesnt know  :flipoff2:
