well i have been thinking as i tend to do and here is my current thought. if someone wants to build a rig why not start with a 2wd s-10? i'm sure one could be found with a vortec 4.3L and a 4L60E for a realitively good price. maybe one that has a few dings in it. if it could be had for a decent price it seems like a builder to me. chunk the bed in favor of a flatbed, exo-cage, slap an atlas to the rear of the tranny, and a set of d60's and you would be set. what do you think? :D

if you can find one cheap enough go for it.. just straight axle the front which im sure you were intending (hints buy a 2wd) since the ifs shit sucks.. the 4.3's have pretty good power.. the autos have 700r's.... definitly a flat bed.... go for it High5

i did mention d60 for the axles so yes no ifs. also the late model 4.3Ls in the s-10s came with the 4L60E auto which is basically a electronic 700r4. the reason for the 2wd would be the cost. it could be found cheaper than the 4wd versions. i do think it would be a sweet starting point. the wiring would all be complete. just throw on an adapter and and atlas. a good set of flexy leaf springs. no i dobt it'll be me doing it. i've already got a vortec 350 with a 4L80E in my jeep along with 62" wide 14bolt and d60. like i said i was just thinking it would be good for someone wanting a starting point.:D

now you are thinking like me. how to get to the baddest trails cheap. i have a line on a 97 2wd s-10 with 60k on it. all i need is a divorce 205 and some killer axles. just so happen to have a set of rockwells at the house. there are a hundred combo that people can put together cheap if they shop it right. mike
Buddy of mine started with a 2wd one, 'course a 4.3 doesn't cut it for mud. So he went with a 488" stroker/TH400/divorced T-case, 44 front, Eaton rear, spring-over rear/F150 coils front, & 38.5" Boggers :)

I've had this same idea, alot cheaper and if you got a 4x4 you would just ditch the transfer case and front stuff anyway. I would get one with a 4.3 and manual so I could bolt up my non computer TH-350 and toy transfer case easily

are the later frames fully boxed?? I had an 82 2wd that I put a v8 in and it bent the rear of the frame...

If you can handle the d-60 and steering mods I think the person could box the frame easily.

I bought a 1994 4x2 S10 and I'm shoehorning in an EFI 454, TH400, doubler, and NP205 along with D60 front and 14BFF rear... All with coils and a 3/4 link suspension. Might even run hummer rims to narrow it up a bit.
As a matter of fact I just got in from removing the brake booster so I can stick the hydroboost in :D
