So is there ANY POSSIBLE WAY to clam these little fellas down? My Mom bought one last weekend for $400. Cute as a button but wild as a turkey.
If the dog (He is 9weeks old) gets neutered, will that calm him down?
Looking for advice to calm the little guy down

ALWAYS high strung, unless they are sleeping.
Age will mello it out a bit but not for a while and they still are a handfull.
One of my best friends has one that I have had the privledge of seeing grow from a few weeks old to now (about 4 years).
She is still pretty wound up at times but can be nice. ALWAYS trying to lick peoples faces though. Annoys the chit out of me.
EDIT- DAMN good dog!!!

Make sure your mom gets him trained, or trains him well.
They are high energy and very very intelligent generally.
This leads to all sorts of foolishness if the dog isnt trained properly.
If she intends to keep him locled up 8 hours a day while she works she will have a little monster on her hands in no time.
There are tons of thing to do with JRs that would tire them out, and teach them obeidience...running lure courses, fly ball, agility courses, frisbee etc...
If shes just looking for a quiet lap dog shes in for a rude awakening.
Training, and working with the dog daily to tire him out and teach him his place in life is really the best way to go.

neutering won't help a bit
mine is almost 7 years old and still hyper as hell
sounds like mom should have done a little [i]research[/] before choosing a breed
like someone else said, "training, training, training"
I recommend obedience classes...just because you can get him socialized a little bit. We did "at home" with mine, and he goes apeshit around other animals. I wish we had went the class route.

I think that I got one of the rare JRTs that likes to sleep alot. The only time that he is hyper is when someone new comes over and it only lasts for about 5 minutes. We live on 2 acres and we had an "invisable fence" set up and now he can run around like an idiot all day long.
The best advice that I can tell you is take an obedience class as soon as they allow. Its usually a shot thing rather than age. So I think 12-18 weeks is when we took our dog to classes.
Also, at that young of an age they like to chew on everything. Get some toys made of rope or a Kong. Cheap dog stuff www.omahavaccine.com
You didn't mention if she got a male or female dog.
If you do decide to give it up, do so surfin around on the internet and look for purebred rescues or JRT rescue sites.
Later.

My two are the same way.

I have two JRTs and am a big JRT fan, and have JRT site. www.jrtzone.com
Anyway.... my two JRTs are pretty calm - yea they can go into turbo mode from time to time, but for the most part just hang out. The one I take to work with me, and my brother takes his JRT to work with him also. (we work at the same place)
I would recommend obidience school (petsmart has one you can take the dog at 10 weeks), crate training. Also, if she bought the dog and leave it at home for 8 hours by itself.. she go the wrong breed... she would be better off getting another dog to keep it company if she is gonna be out a lot.
Most JRTs like to run, so never let it off leash in an unfence area. Although there are the *few* who do stick around.... I also have the radio (underground) fence, and it works well for me, I have had a few people tell me that their JRT will run through it - but that is probably the case with a lot of breeds.
Anyway, good luck, and check out my jrt site - there is a message forum there, too

Aside from puppy prozac exercise is the best thing. Once again look at what these dogs were bred for and still used for. Kind of neat though. When the fox goes to ground(goes down a hole) they send these dogs in the hole after them. They ride in their handlers coat on horseback through out the hunt then go to work when they are needed.
These are high energy dogs that are incredibly smart. Keep the body and brain active and you should be fine.
