: to cut or not to cut?
IndyCJ 12-10-2001, 07:33 AM That is the question.
I just pulled a Dana 44 from a 75 Cherokee, going in my 76 CJ5.
The damn thing is WIDE, 61.5"
So, the question is, do I cut it down, outboard the springs, or what? Opinions?
What about the rear? The Cherokee had an offset 44, and I didn't feel like re-tubing it. What are my options?
Thanks!

66CJdean 12-10-2001, 09:37 AM Cut off the spring pads, shock mounts, and a few inches off the long side. Have the axle resplined and weld the stoff back on where you need it. The pinion might still be offset some and be no problem for the driveline.
Lost_Soul 12-10-2001, 09:48 AM The only problem with cutting is everytime you need an axle or something you will have to have one cut down and resplined. The CJ5 before 1976 had dana 44 rears that are narrow track. 53" I think. Try and track down one of those. They did come stock with 4.27 gears
IndyCJ 12-10-2001, 09:50 AM Dean,
If I cut the 5" off the long side (32.5" down to 27.5") that's gonna net me a 56.5" axle.
I want the rear to be "close" (damn close), what's a Scout? 58" I think? And I think a Widetrack CJ rear is 54.5" correct?
Just weighing my options. :D
TIA
WheelingPiazza 12-10-2001, 10:11 AM You can find centered waggy axles in a 58'. I have one under my jeep right now..
Rember you can also go the model 20 rear out of a waggy too, its stronger and different then the standard cj 20.. Most come in centered diffs as well..

The Rockslut 12-10-2001, 10:14 AM 61.5" is WIDE? Man, what about my front, it's 69" Is that WAY WIDE? :flipoff2: Just run it wide and you'll love it.
IndyCJ 12-10-2001, 10:18 AM Slut! Your's is MEGA WIDE! :flipoff2:
I don't want to go REAL Wide. If I go REAL wide, my width will be longer than my wheelbase. :flipoff2: :D
Po' riggity 12-10-2001, 10:34 AM Indy, simple solution. leave the axles, and lengthen the wheel base :smokin: :D

IndyCJ 12-10-2001, 10:40 AM Bite me Scott. :flipoff2:
Hey Scott, did I mention I got that Cherokee for 100 bucks yet?
:flipoff2: LOL
Po' riggity 12-10-2001, 11:32 AM Yeah you did.. you keep mentioning that... like I care :flipoff2: :D Good deal though.. sell the yj I take it?

Adam Ant 12-10-2001, 11:33 AM out board the springs and leave it stock!! run a scout rear end
you will love the stabilty!!!
my .02cents
Adam,
IndyCJ 12-10-2001, 11:33 AM Yea, I sold it to a guy out in Maryland. I'm gonna meet him halfway this weekend and give it up. :(
Oh well, onto bigger and better things. :D
Po' riggity 12-10-2001, 12:02 PM Too bad you got rid of the YJ.. but like you said.. on to bigger and better things :D
Scott :grinpimp:<><
66CJdean 12-10-2001, 01:41 PM Scout will be 58" so cut as much as you want to get the width you want. As far as running a custome width axle being a problem to me that is a very small problem. Get one from the junkyard and have it resplined and get the other side you have a set of spares if you are worried about it.
redruM 12-10-2001, 02:01 PM run them full width
mine are 71" front & 67 Rear (im adding 2" spacers to the rear to match the front)
all this and hummer wheels will only be 2" wider than my TJ is now)
CJ-Jeeper 12-10-2001, 02:20 PM If you cut only the long side on the the front, you need to cut the same amount you want to move the spring pad.
If the Waggy is 31.5" between spring centers & your Jeep is 27.5", you need to cut it down 4". Otherwise your wheel will stick out further on one side.

I am pretty sure he is building a rear to match his scout front.
High5 12-10-2001, 07:45 PM just leave it. 61.5" wide isn't too wide and as stated before it will make finding spares easy. find a rear from a 80's model waggy to match either the amc20 or d44 will work. also you can swap 8lug outers on it and get a cab and chassi dually 14bolt rear if you want to go big. they are 62" wide.:D

INDY ... I have a pair of axles like WHEELING is talking about for sale on this board if you have any interest. Post there or email me @ TIGGER4X (tigger4x@yahoo.com)
IndyCJ 12-12-2001, 05:28 AM Tigger,
Thanks for the offer man, but I've got the front, and I'm going to get the rear end tonight. (Scout axle) :)
Thanks though!
Shaggygto 12-12-2001, 06:21 AM I am running fullwidths and I love it. Of course I have a CJ-7, but none the less I still love the stability.:smokin:
