Say you have a friend in the junkyard that calls up and says "Hey I've got this big axle here, what is it?"

How do you answer them? How can you tell from just looking at it, what kind of axle it is. And how can you describe it to them over the phone. Is it a D44, and D60 or D70 or GM Corp 14.

Is it as easy as these pictures dictate? But still how do you tell the difference from a 60 or 44 by just describing over the phone. Also how about telling the difference from a 60 or a 70? And lastly how can you make sure they aren't getting the 61.

60s and 70s should have it stamped in the housing around the cover. The 60 and 70 share the same cover, but the 70 has a bigger housing, so there's a bigger gap between the edge of the cover and housing on the 70. The 14 bolt has huge drums with that funny little circle on the lugs. Plus the Danas have that kind of diamond shaped housing.

Best way to start off is the number of bolts in the diff cover, then axle shaft diameter and spline count.
