: How to get "cheap" pick-n-pull parts Q

For those of you who are "Pick-n-Pull" veterans, I've got a question about getting parts "cheaper".

I need to get a few pieces off of axles/transmissions/tcases but some of the self serve places I've been to have a policy of "parts of an assembly cost the same as the whole assembly".

Most of the self serve places have counter people that don't know their head from a hole in the wall:)

If I walk up with an axle stub shaft, what would I tell them I have in order to avoid the $70+ most want for an axle?

Unfortunately, I'm too honest to pull the "shove it down the pants leg" scheme or similar type stuff:emb:

The best deal I've got at PnP is telling them the intercooler I pulled off a Rice Turbo car was a heater core, 13.99 baby.

If you want deals you need The hat! These are rare and only us regulars get them. It's wool!

I usually have the best luck with the female counter persons, maybe it's cause I am so good lookin especially in my grungies. OK maybe not. Heres the real tip there is a price list on the wall find something cheap on the list and tell them it is that. The truck stuff costs more and has blue paint on it so they can identify it, cover the blue paint by rubbinbg grease on it. if they are being pricks they will try to charge you for a yoke and a transmission when you buy a transmission. put the trans in a wheelbarrow so the yoke doesn't show, and tell them it is not there. don't pay to get in just go dirty and show them the stamp on your hand, just pretend you were already there. bring some parts you don't want to the counter, show that part first and when they say an aircleaner cost $12 put it back, then after you put one thing back they will start righting things as freebies on the reciept. Understand that there are some things you shouldn't buy at pick and pull, and some things that are a great deal there, only buy the stuff that is a good deal.

Normally I go to the Junk yard after I've been working on my truck for the whole morning. Since I'm a Yankee in Tennessee I carefully plan my appearance and wardroabe for a week in advance so I don't get shafted. About 5 days before I plan to go, I stop shaving. Then the day of, I put on my RealTree camo shirt. Then I put on my grungiest pair of pants. Next I work on my truck for a few hours so I have plenty of grease under my fingernails and on my face. When I show up at the junkyard I put on my best country twang so I'm just another good ole boy. I find talking about your dead end job working at the local cement factory on second shift also does wonders (actually that's what my friend does when he goes).

Good luck

DERF people got some dumb ass answers. YES things on the wall will have different prices. LOOK CARFULLY. All my toyota stuff thats just stuff comes out of a toyota car. It ens up being cheeper, They start to beliebe it to when it seems to be a pattern. Any fullsize stuff comes out of fullsize cars. Yes alot of things can be kinda switched. Like a small radiator could be a saab heater cooler? How in the hell would they know. If all else whell thats where ya found it. They jip ya on shit like on toy trucks the wiper and headlight switch are basicall one in the same. well tech. they are two pieces and I got charged for BOTH!! that sucked ass. I always keep ALL the nuts and bolts to EVERYTHING I PULL in my box. I have so much shiet that they will never know. anthing small goes in the box. I rarely get checked on the way out.

don't carry a toolbox, carry a back pack with your tools in it. its easier on your back and if you have to carry 2 larger things it keeps both hands free. plus they normally have some smalll pockets in them for the small parts :D get a copy of there price sheet also, that way you know what something will cost or you will know what to call the part before you get to the counter. bs with the person at the counter also and just ask if they can give you a break, all they can do is say no. you never know they just might.

Good ole Boy accents only work if the guy behind the counter speaks English.

Grundged up going in helps, friendly smile and greeting to the folks at the counter helps too; if it's not too busy they'll remember ya (the whole 1st impression thing).

Got an 231 for $40 one day: Guy asked what is was, said "t-case out of a chevy truck" He took a few minutes looking for "tcase" in their parts list :D , then said "$100?" I told him he could keep it, right there, on his bench... then I asked him "what's your best price?" He said "$50 cash", I said "here's $40 have a good one" and headed for the door with my t-case.

I don't know about you guys, but there is noone at the pick and pull in Salt Lake that even understands english. I pulled a complete carrier and geaset out of a 9" Ford last week. The guy asked me what it was at the counter. I said Carrier. $39 Most of the time they don't have a clue. :skull:

Be careful about pulling 4x4 front axle assemblys. They usually dont have a seperate price posted for a 4x4 front end and they just charge you for a rear end which is pretty cheap. They do however, have a price for a 4x4 front axle that is not posted and if you get someone who knows what they are doing, you can get ripped off.

Or....You could have a buddy who manages a pick-n-pull in, open up after hours to "FINANCE" your entire 3/4ton Coil spring conversion....hehehehe...not that I did that

Or if after hrs doesn't work you go in miday (really busy) and get axles /tranny's/x-fer's/and entire motors for the price of lawnmower engines......$20.00 a pop..

To bad he doesn't work there anymore.:(

Whatever you do, don't bring your dad. I did that when I was 16, and we almost got charged $130 CDN for a headlight assembly off a Mazda 626. I wasn't impressed. So I told them to go fuck themselves. And then my dad wasn't impressed. :D

I almost never go to a Pink-n-Pull.
Most want 50% of new, even if you have used brake pads in your hand (joke'n)
I only go when I need a non Toyota Pickup part to fab something.

Here in New England you can see a half dozen 84-88 4x4 Toyota in the want advertiser.
95% of my parts come from whole parts trucks I get for a few hundred dollars.
Why would I pay $150+ for a font axle, when I can get a whole truck?
I am looking at a truck that is advertised for the price of the new tires that are on it. Buy the tires and I will through in the truck.

One rule of thumb is whatever the part is say it is from a car because the truck parts are almost always more $$$. They have the bords out there that tell you the price of things so find an item that you could pass this off as and go for it.

just a story,

I went to the worst pick and pull the other day, i had a Sag pump and bracket in my hand, went up to buy it, the guy said 85 bucks, my jaw hit the floor, i said no!,
he said 10 for the bracket 30 for the pump and 15 for the high psi line (plus cores and other stickin' it to you charges) i took out wire cutters and cut the line (only wanted the fitting anyway)
he knocked 15 off the price, i told him the pump was junk, and i did not want it, i just had to buy it because i forgot my pulley puller,
i would pay the 5 or 10 for the core charge but not 30 for a good pump, he did not belive me so i poured a ton of water out of the pump that was resting in there (i foud it best to leave water in the, before you pay for it) he still said no, so i tossed it in the scrap metal and left,
how could someone @ pink and pull not want to deal?

I actually just bought a tool bag for holding my tools. Works great.. cant find little parts in there either. Last time i was in there, I threw a switch in there, and I couldnt find it.. let alone them. ANd how can i get my own copy of the price sheet? I want one of those. My thing there, is I go about once a week, and whenever I see new cars being put out, I raid them first.. just take anything that is good.. ALso, my word of advice is to keep an eye on your tools.. they seem to get stolen alot there.. I havent had that problem yet though, I keep mine right by me.. BTW if anyone sees any pre-1970 Mercedes Benz cars in any of the bay area ones, drop me an e-mail and let me know.. parts on my 65 benz are expensive, and pick and pull is a god sent for them (mny distrubitor shaft was bent, and the distrubitor finally went south, and they are $600 new, I didnt even lie about it... paid $18.50 at pick and pull.. car runs great). Anyway, thanks. Garrett

Fortunately, no lost tools.... but I am damn near standing on them:D

The point of this post wasn't really "how to steal" from pick-n-pull... more of a how do I avoid paying full transmission price on a transmission part(or similar I only need this $30 part)

I don't have much of a problem with the $1.00 "entrance" fee... especially when I hit all four in the SF Bay area during the same day:D:D

Thanks for the thorough list of ideas. Didn't know about the "special" truck paint. I did know the "this is from a car" trick. I can't really do the "greasy" hands trick.... &*&$^ "new" truck:(

BTW, 84extracab, I'd probably buy complete vehicles but I don't have the room:(

Before I go into the yards I pull all the money except what the max I want to spend is. I also make sure I have all 1's and maybe a couple of 5's wadded up really good and some quaters in change. Then I go wearing my grubiest clothes, making sure nothing has a college name on it or something and act like I know what going down and ain't going to take any shit. Like a whigger. I never tell them what I'm looking for either. I've found out they won't charge you as much that way. I'm always just looking around. When I get out there I pull all nuts, bolts, fuses that I might needed and they go in my tool bag. Then I take the stuff I want up front as them how much. When they tell me I say 10-15 bucks under what the max I will pay is. And work up from there, making sure to pull my wallet and count my mnoey a couple of times. If they won't take it then I'll just leave all of it on the counter and leave. That usual gets them cause I get all kinds of shit they don't want to put back.

I always go in in my ripped up greasy coveralls, first off. Or ripped up jeans. Nothing high-dollar, my clothes look like I went shopping at the dumpster behind Goodwill if I'm going pick-n-pulling. Most of my friends know, this isn't a big change from how I usually dress anyway. :)

Drive the ugliest pile of parts I own (nothing built) 'cause they can see the parking lot from the office. If it looks like it's going to fall apart on arrival, all the better. More rust = less $$$.

Only take a handful or pocketful of tools. Just a little assortment. Most of my decent stuff stays in the truck; if I need a special tool, I go back to the truck to get just it, then back to pull my part.

If I need a bunch of stuff, I ask where I can put my heavy stuff while I shop some more; then I make a greasy nasty pile of parts. When I'm done shopping, go to the office, tell 'em I have a little pile going, and they come look at it (they don't do the wheelbarrow thing around here). They look at it, add it all up, and usually I pay about half what most folks do. It helps that they know me too.

Best deal yet, was a pile that had: four coil springs, two 9" axle shafts, one 9" housing, one 110A Taurus alternator, one Camaro shifter, one Camaro fan, one Toy IFS 4x4 PS box, both lines for the PS box, and a pile of nuts-n-bolts-n-stuff, for $100.

Another tip: a lot of pick-n-pulls have warranties, 30 days or so, guaranteed that the parts you buy, will work for at least 30 days. The one near me does, anyway; I always tell 'em no warranty, don't bother marking my parts, they'll never see 'em again.

You just have to go to the Pick N Pull with me.:D

Just ask Well done man what Kind of crap I get away with.

I picked up a cherokee chief front dana 44 housing with two sets of axles. I got a saginaw steering pump and bracket out of an econoline van for my Sag swap onto the 5.0
I also picked up a neet little cooler I'm gonna use for my hydro assist setup.

I think I walked out paying only $127.00

I told the lady exactly what I had she called out the head manager, and she decided that I had a ford housing with spindles and a power steering pump.

Too me thats just like winning big in Vegas.
