100% awesome...

I would love some portals if they weren't geared so damn low... But those things are killer!

What are you going to do/use to reduce axle wrap? Portal axles generate silly amounts of torque windup.

Looks cool though with the olive drab on the wheels cause it matches the paint on yer truck.

More pics, more pics.

Later.

Err... yes. You got a problem with that? :flipoff2:

They may look small, but they're a true 36" tall. Not everyone can run those bling bling five lug rims. :flipoff2:

I'm thinking if I ever do go with a diesel I'll have to nix the idea of getting an orion case and get an H55F behind the ranger instead. But unlike Rfrey's axles, mine are only 5.97s.

Here's some pics to give you an idea:

Both front and rear axle are going to have ladder bars. The front's will run under the tcase, but I'd rather have it hang low than have the front axle twist.

Looks like some awesome fabbing. You will have to bring it down to Moab and show it off.

What kind of Leafs are you running?

Hey, Brian!

Those are Volvo portals, right? Can you outline what exactly you've done to them (or not done ;-) ? For example, are they stock width? Do they have a similar or higher rated highway speed compared to Mog portals? Taller ring and pinions available? Neato!

TIA, Steve Fox, www.tornadoalley.whatever

Awesome fab eh? It's all in the camera angles. ;) It's not perfect, but they'll do fine. I should be in Moab after Xmas for two weeks. (knock on wood) I hope to be at Cruise Moab '04 if school goes well. I drive like an old woman though, don't want to break anything. :emb3: Leaves are bastard 55 springs, 7+diving board in the back, 8 in the front.

Well, I'll agree with the pretty part, but what's not absolutely beautiful about pressed 1/4" steel? Rattle can them every few years, good as new! :D

Where did you get them?

Real4x4. Next time I get a pair I want to whole C303. ;)

The volvos are stock width, the only things you need to get them under a (drum braked) Cruiser is move the spring mounts (I used the factory volvo front mounts), move the brake lines, work up something for the driveshafts, fab up some ladder bar mounts and go! They're pretty damn close to being the stock width of an FJ60 axle (about 61" center of the wheel, center of the wheel) and can be taken upto 150kph. (around 90mph) I know of no one right now making taller volvo r&ps, though there have been rumors. 5.97 or 7.14.

I'm still looking for steel for the driveshafts.

looks great brian, i like the color too it almost matches.
i just like the idea of a SUA with so much clearance;) i wonder if you really will generate that much wrap with the SUA??

Why not use the land rover D/s ends. I have heard something like a series 2a driveshaft will work, then send that out to be mated to the transfercase end.

1) Because I'm fricken cheap!
2) Because this way I can run Cruiser ujoints (which are larger than rover stuff)
3) A friend is doing machine work for free. Retubing driveshafts is much more $$$. The closest place to have quality work done on driveshafts is 50 miles away, and I don't have time during the week between work and school.
4) I'm cheap! :D

Rhino- Ryan Frey has had some problems with spring-under axle wrap. I'm not going to take the chances, hence the brackets front and rear.

Nice looking piggy you got there! Good thing you didn't go SOA, you wouldn't get it in or out of the garage!:skull:

Dana/Spicer = :rainbow: :flipoff2: I could use a front? output flange off a Dana 300 and use a 1310 yoke, but I'd rather stay consistant and have all four ujoints the same size. I have some spicer u-joints already, but the PTO is a different story. ;)

Not quite, I want to reside in Alaska. :D Last year a friend and I took the truck to Cruise Moab then headed up the Alcan and spent a month in Alaska goofing around, living out of the truck, seeing the sights. It was a blast. Someday I hope to head back.

The truck's been in the garage on jackstands so long I forgot what the other side says!

Thanks for all the words of encouragement. If all goes well, I should have the front end back together this weekend and the front tires mounted. From there it's steering, brakes, the driveshafts and some small things.
