: towing in the snow
welndmn 12-10-2001, 01:25 PM I am planing an Iron Mt. rd run and and i going to die if i trailer (if i still fit) or even worse Flat tow? should i just find a place to ditch the truck and trailer and freese the rest of the way? i have never towed anything in the snow
GloNDark 12-10-2001, 01:27 PM Does your trailer have brakes? If so, you should be fine. I am not sure about towing on a trailer with out brakes though.
I can tell you that flat towing a locked rig in the snow is fawked up! Ask bigwilly what he did to his 96 Dodge. $2000 and change later the dodge is fixed, the willys is not. :(
The Jerk 12-10-2001, 01:28 PM umm just slow down. jiMMy

Jake was doing like 4 mph when the willys jack knifed and pushed him into a ditch! Dam spooled rear ends.

I have flat towed for years with detroits on the Jeep, many, many times in the snow, without any incident. Like Jimmy said, just slow down.
welndmn 12-10-2001, 02:09 PM the trailer i use (still unsure if i will still fit on it, it has rails that go down the sides and no i can't cut them off i don't work for a merry go round so i own nothing :D ) has brakes on one axle when i flat tow i pull the d-shaft

Yeah tell big willy that! I have flat towed my in the snow with the welded rear end and it was scary to say the least. I got there in one piece but I would choose a trailer anyday over it.
Rubicrawler 12-10-2001, 02:16 PM Mark- Just tow it up and park the rig at the Sly Park Safeway. It's a short, 5 min drive from there. Hwy 50 is usually clear to Pollack Pines.
Would you mind if my daughter and I tag along on your run? Let me know when you're planning on going up.
MattS 12-10-2001, 02:50 PM If you trailer it make sure and adjust the trailer brake (when warm) properly. My brother tows a trailer everyday and had is trailer brakes lock up before the trucks brakes and it ended up next to him. :)
$5600 later and both look new again.
PurpleYotaGirl 12-10-2001, 02:53 PM Hey Mark! Your best bet would be to take the two rig and go to the left when ya get off the freeway and park the tow rig at the safeway .. thats what we did worked out fine..;) Or take it to the road and Leave it before the snow where the Ranger Sign is..
welndmn 12-10-2001, 03:31 PM forgot another addition to the towing
My tow rig is 2wd and i don;t want to buy chains, so is the safeway past the chain check point?
Mark- its still in the works, were hoping for sometime in Jan, but no idea when yet
smurfsdad 12-10-2001, 03:36 PM unless there is an unusual storm the day you are going you will not need chains to get to sly park
mtadams 12-10-2001, 03:38 PM Let me know when you are going... I might be interested in tagging along.

Nah, Even this last Storm that was two weekends ago and We were stuck on 50 for 5hours. You could still do the Sly park exit the chains started after that.. It would have to be A Bad storm.;)
Lucy's Driver 12-11-2001, 09:32 AM It sounds like both flat tow guys who had problems were towing rigs with spools in the rear.
An actual locker should allow the wheels to differentiate since there'd be no torque going into the rear.
