: 5.0L Power Steering Upgrade (Saginaw)?
cwate 12-10-2001, 02:14 PM The factory Ford PS pump on the '90 5.0 in my YJ just bites. It's noisy, it's weak, and I hate it.
So... I've been told that the brackets and Saginaw pump from a mid-80's Ford Econoline van (with a 351) will bolt right up to the 'stang 302. Instant fix. You can even keep the compressor, since A/C was pretty common in the vans.
So what's the real deal? Is this legit? Anyone done it? I've got the parts, but I want to know if there's any gotchas before I dive in. Like... is the high-pressure hose fitting the same? What belt do I use? Do the pulleys all end up perfectly in line for the serpentine belt? ...?
TIA,
Chris
emsoffroad 12-10-2001, 02:26 PM Not 100% sure on this setup, but on any other setup. The 351w brackets will not work on the 302 if they bolt to both the block or water pump then to the head. If it doesn't go into the head you should be fine.
H8monday 12-10-2001, 03:27 PM I modified the stock bracketry on the 5.0 to accept the saginaw unit, and it worked great. I heard the same thing about the Econoline vans with the 351, having the correct bracketry. You will also need to get, a "press on", Saginaw pulley, for a 6 rib serpentine belt. If the bracketry repositions the pump pulley, you will need a different length serpentine belt also.
It was sure worth all the fabrication to get rid of that pos Ford pump. That thing was worthless and weak, and whined everytime I took it for a walk in the rocks.

The van's v-belt pulley and my 5.0L pulley both use the same tool for removal & installation. They should both be press-fit. But are you saying that I can't just put the 5.0 pulley onto the van pump? I was ASSuming I could just swap it over...

H8monday 12-10-2001, 09:20 PM The Ford pump pully has a smaller diameter, opening than the saginaw. I would think you drill or ream it to the propper size to fit the saginaw. I am not sure of the dimensions you would need to drill to for a prooper fit and alignment though. I just picked up a new pulley from the GM dealer. I asked for a pulley for an 89 Camaro with, with a 350. They are 6 rib serpentine, 6" diameter, and cost about $17.
broncorob 12-11-2001, 05:17 AM I got stuff from a late 80s van 351 to go on my 94 bronco 351 and took the bracketry pump and pulley. I know that doesn't help you much, but remember this when looking. The forged brackets came after 87 and the thin pressed metal ones came before. It helps to know what you're asking for when you call around to yards looking

Wow, that was worth the price of admission! Thanks, H8monday!

welndmn 12-11-2001, 09:56 AM yieks i had to get my pulley from ford cost me like 40 for a serp,
the 351 has a hair of a different water pump, it will work if you drill one more hole, but the 302 one is easier to put on a 302
