dana 300 tail shaft houseing getting hot
I just installed my dana 300 with a 4 to 1 kit as well as down east offroads flip kit. I'm still working out the bugs like getting it to seal good and stuff like that.
But my question is.. Is it normal for the out put shaft to get so hot that I cant even put my hand on it after only a short drive. I'm sure theres enough oil in it maybe even to much. and the rear yoke doesnt seam to spin all that easy. do I maybe need to reshim the output bearing?
or it this normal?
thanks for the imput.

the housing is aluminum its going to be the hottest part on it- there's enough oil in it right? there should not be any pre-load problems unless there's something farther up inside casung a problem-Jess

I just saw this same problem while installing my 32 spline output kit on my 300. The output shaft rides inside a portion of the input shaft and that clearance is set by a number of shims on the rear bearing for end play. If you get it too tight, the two shafts rub together causing heating due to friction. Check your end play, I don't recall the specs off hand, but it is only a couple of thousandths. I have not driven mine yet, bit I did have a problem with the binding you are describing. I just shimmed the bearing and it was fixed. You should be able to get the end play specs from any Jeep manual.

End play should be set between .002 and .005. I only know because I'm doing the flip kit & D300 4:1's now also.

well that's moat likey the problum then I dont have any play at all. I never even herd that this was an issue. so I'll take a look at that and tear it apart again. this time I should be able to leave it in the jeep though?? I hope.

It doesn't seal properly, you're trying to check clearance issues (end-play), and you want to leave it IN the Jeep?
Have fun.Can you say bootay-fab?

You really are a retard!!! You need to find a different hobby, try the special olympics if you need a step in the right direction. I am sure someone in the Goldsboro area knows a couple of things about D300s maybe you should ask them......newbie!!!!
