Yes that time has come, I'm going to get some power steering. Who do you think makes a good set up and what did you pay? How does it hold up to the tires your running? I only run lil 33's.:)

I have run both Toy and Track/kick steering. I really like the performance of the Toy over the others. I have used the Calmini kit for the Sam parts, and found it was just as easy to make my own. I currently run the Track/kick setup on my 94 with 38's, and have been experiencing "puking" from the resivoir, prolly from the workout the pump is getting with the 38's on it.

Toyota systems are BY FAR the way to go. Drive a Sidekick P/S powered setup and a Toyota P/S powered setup side by side and it will feel like the Sidekick equipped setup doesn't even have power steering.... especially with 33"+ tires.

Our kits work with any steering system since we supply a modified Toyota pitman arm. Can work with or without A/C. We also have different pulleys available in case you want even more juice flowing thru your steering setup at low RPMs.

Go overkill, use the chevy stuff. There are tons of 2wd trucks out there and it's really not that hard. Just fab up some mounts for the pump and mount your box. I can't really talk though cause I want to upgrade to hydraulic

I dont know about that glenn.....I have the kick setup, with high cross over steering on my D44's, using a custom 4" drop pitman arm......and i can turn my 37's at 2psi locked up in the rocks......One handed!
Fatty, if you do the toy setup, go with a custom setup using the IFS box.......Or use the kick setup.
Brent has the kit for the brackets for pretty cheap and get a donor box and pump.
I have heard of people going with the Scout setup also, or a Chevy steering box ( i think S-10).

Good luck!

Let us know what you decide to do, and take some pics along the way too.

The steering arm/axle combo your using makes a big difference in how the P/S feels. I am running a Toyota Celica box right now. With stock axles and Trails Toughs crossover steering I turned my ARB on and off all the time to get steering back, even with my 32's. Once I put the Toy axles on there and some hi-steer steering arms I can leave my locker on all day and for the most part use one hand nearly anywhere to turn. The difference is that the Toy steering arms are several inches longer in respect to the kingpins than the Samurai steering arms. This gives you a lot more leverage at the expense of turning radius. The proof for me came when I let my friend drive my Zuk (he has a TJ). He was amazed at how easy it was to steer in the rocks compared to his TJ w/ 32's (I am running 33 x 15.50 SX's) and he had the ARB engaged the entire trip. So I guess whatever you do it'll work good with 33's. I have heard the Celica sector shafts are prone to breakage once you go big tires but never seen one break first hand, just heard it thru the grapevine.

I run a Sidekick set-up. It turns my 33x12.50's just fine with a lock-rite up front and cross-over steering. I blew the high pressure line connecting the pump and box on one run, but it just looked old and was jerry-rigged with some tape to begin with (didn't notice when I bought it). I replaced the line with a new one and have had no problems since then. This seems like a pretty good/popular swap. I would recommend it. ~Steve

I'm going to try and go chevy with hydro assist and if that doesn't pan out the toy stuff worked good on my 4runner so it should work even better in a light weight sami.

Has anyone actually made a Saginaw box fit? Doesn't seem like it would work unless you humped the radiator off to the side.

Fatty, i have the Sidekick steering in my sami, and it is sluggish when turning side to side, flex out, and locked in the frontend. I am thinking of replacing the sidekick steering to something else. i was thinking of the saginow box, but it weigh a ton. It is a very good setup. I do have to say the secta shaft in a saginow is the same size as a toy. and this is the part that breaks on a box apart from the pitman arm. Personally i am going with a toy set up, rather then the saginow box, Cuz the saginow weigh a ton and toy doesn't, and they are equally as strong. ( I heard this from Mike Shaffer and Randy Ellis) If you want you can have my old sluggish set up:p :D
( Steering only sluggish while wheeling hard, it could be better)

I installed a Saginaw (chevy) steering box in Rick Gammie's (rick@ottindustries.com) longbody....... his setup has serious POWER and with the saginaw you have near unlimited options as far as pitman arms go.......

Rick runs the stock (brass ) Sami rad and we had no clearance problems (once we extended the frame like all Modified Sami's should do........):D

I've heard some good ideas, anyone have pics of any of the Sag set ups or the Toy IFS? :)

Hard to get a good picture when the truck is all together. I am running the Saginaw box, but since I have the 4.3 , I had to jog the frame. This wasn't a big deal since the coils took away any need for a frame past the engine mounts.

I did this for around 250.00. The box was from a YJ, pump is chev , ram is 2"x8", lines are custom.

This system works too good. My tire was against a rock once and I had a slight bend in my tie rod...........I palm steered it right, and made a boomerang out of it.

It also takes away any road and trail feel, and is like having the worlds largest steering stablizer on. You can do mach I over turtle rock, or washboard,

Fatkid I think Sky has done just about every power steering option on a Samurai - you might wanna consult him.

I am in the process of collecting parts for my own PS conversion. I'm going to use the IFS Toy box probably w/ 2WD pitman arm & go to S/R with Wrangler springs:cool:

Hey Fat Kid...
Im looking for the best way to go to... I run a Full Detroit in my 44 and 35's and the Manual steering kicked my ass at Cal Rocs..I could steer the box to lock and the rag joint would just twist all crazy gay like...

Lauren has chevy steering on his with 37 ssr's with a detroit and laughs at 0 psi in snow and like 5 psi in the rocks its one finger withi cross over ... I am trying to stay super light so im tinkering with full hydro..... why not full hydro your turd and be done? Its full trailer right? Randy in our club runs full hydro on his sami and loves it

It's not full trailer queen, but it's close. I also considered the full hydro set up but it's kinda a waste to me, but who knows. I hope to find a good set up.:)
