: Taking the plunge!

I have officially broken down and decided to replace my Toy with a Mog. I test drove one at eurotruck-importers last week. It was absolutely sweet! Thanks Sean, that ride was enough for me to make the switch.

I have a question though, I have heard it stated that the axles are not capable of speed over 60MPH. I have also heard that the tranny may come apart over 60MPH. The question is: are the axles not capable of turning at that speed or is it just the engine power? Also, does the tranny overheat or mechanically fail? Can a tranny cooler be added?

Finally, if you know anybody interested in a heavily modified Tacoma, have them check out this link: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=182797

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Tranny issues....... It's in the FAQ's buddy. It's a bearing issue and it is under debate of what the true cause is. Im going with contamination of oiling grooves reducing lubrication and then being exasperated by higher speeds as they were designed for.

Most the questions on the axles is there too.... just takes more reading to piece it together. Basically there is some concern of pinion gear over heating and outer bearings. Both are still debated by the axle guys. Talk to Wolfgang or Daniel (Tibius offroad) and Ryeguy (Exact axles)

Sean's a great guy and it is a wise choice to buy a Mog from him.

I have been all over the FAQs. That is exactly why I asked these questions specifically. The discussions I have read there have been inconclusive...there is a problem but not defined. I guess I will have to take it apart and find out for myself.

I stopped by Cold War over lunch to just drool over all the cool stuff they always have there. I was totally digging on the mini-mog he had. Think that's called a 401? It was pristine!

Thank you for using the FAQ's that's what I built them for. To bad they are no longer being kept up to date.

You are correct the problem(s) has not been conclusively identified. BTW.... the theory I am following on the tranny comes from someone with a Mog who worked on bearings for things like Nasa projects.

For the tranny there is a roller bearing replacement being worked on. It is in the testing phase and is probably another year or more from production.

I saw the roller bearing thread. IMO-if you keep the fluids at their correct viscosity and clean the bearings should always be stable. Correct viscosity of course means maintaining proper temps. This is my guess of what is going wrong.

The root of my origonal question is: if I swap the motor to one that can push the vehicle at 70MPH can the drivetrain withstand it? BIG question mark???

Finally, thanks for taking the time to set up the FAQ. It was a big part of my decision for a MOG. If you would like to enhance it, I would recommend doing a bunch of cut/paste from some of the links you posted there. It would also be cool to cut/paste that info to the Tech Section. Just a thought. Feel free to ask for help. My hard drive is packed with this crap!

That thing is sweet but I don't think I could bear to go that slow for a 180mile drive to Tellico! LOL

The bearing deal has been done already years ago.I guy that owned a 404 up here did it and said that it was a major pain due to the complexity of all the parts.Don't know the end result unfortunatly.

[/B]I don't think it's just a power deal.At 70 mph with stock tires you would be way up there in the rpm dept. The 2.2 litre in my 404 was really wailing at highway speed but it was definatly smooth.

Only problem with that theory is that there have been tranny's that failed where tempratures and speeds were normal at time of failure and thru out the ownership of the US owner. Prior to that Im sure they were kept to spec. cause the military etc. was pretty religious on keeping their mogs to spec. in maintainance and usage.

I plan to explore the idea of going to a thinner oil and pump it thru a cooleer andddddddd a filter. Some are already finding succes using the newer thinner oils. I hope to eventually also do the roller bearing upgrade. This latest work roller bearing work is being done by Rob Pickering if I remember correctly and he is pushing the test mog with a 615 turbo diesel swap. Yeah I expect it is rather complicated retrofit. Guess it comes down to the the ingenuity of the person or team who is designing the upgrade on howwwwww complicated it gets. Tooo complicated and the upgrade will never be available. Hope they find a good balance.

Side note... for about the same cost as the tranny upgrade (couple grand???) Wolfgang may custom make an R&P for the mog to match someones engine that would bring the RPM's back down to the range the tranny is designed.

thats up to whomever becomes the new Moderator in here. I am no longer the moderator. As a guy who was working 7 days a week I couldnt find the time to be enough of a "hardcore" offroader for pirate so I was removed from the position the beggining of Sept.

Awww man,

That is a 411. Alan Dobbs has one as well. They are pretty cool, but the wheelbase is way to short (something like 65").

Alan has one? That cracks me up but sounds about right. I really miss all of you cooky LR guys sometimes. Just haven't managed to build the same relationships in the Gwagen world... don't think they were quite ready for me.

Hope to get out and see the Franken Rover and everyone else sometime. Let me know if you ever make it to Colorado.
