: price on cutting/splining axle shafts
liveaxle 12-10-2001, 11:50 PM What's the average price to have an axle shaft cut and resplined? Can I expect to get a discount if I have two of the same axle shafts cut down?
On a side note, are there any good shops in Portland OR that will do this?
thanks :)
High5 12-11-2001, 12:08 AM when i had moser shorten my front 60 shafts last year it was $50 for one shaft and $85 for two so yes it is cheaper to have more than one cut.
talked to dutchman the other day and there prices are the same
liveaxle 12-11-2001, 01:07 AM Thanks high5 and yjtj. Where is Dutchman and Moser?
:)

Hope this helps....:D
Medusa 12-11-2001, 08:02 AM Dutchman is in NE Portland (NE Alberta St.). They do outstanding work. The last axles I had cut and re-splined cost $85 for the pair (D60s).

Do the axles have to be identical, or can they be cut to diferent lengths and still get the price for cutting a pair?
Ian-
Tankota 12-11-2001, 12:12 PM Last time I had Dutchman do two axles they were different lengths and were still $85 for the pair ($102 w/ shipping both ways from northern WA.
They did a good job.
liveaxle 12-11-2001, 12:59 PM Thanks for the help guys. I just called Dutchman an they are going to do both the axle shafts for $85.
cbassett 12-11-2001, 09:37 PM Here's a really ignorant follow-up to this question....
How do I measure the required length for the front inner shafts, when having some cut down?
Should this be done with the carrier in the diff, then measure from a certain spot in the diff to a point where and imaginary line would run between upper and lower ball joints?

well how much are you having cut off of each side of the housing?

Well if I knew that I'd know how much to have them shortened!
I got the housing already shortened, so basically I need to know how to measure my inner shaft length requirements.

In this case measure a "stock" width front axle on both sides and then measure yours.......the person you got it from cant tell you how much it was shortned

LC Hamma 12-12-2001, 08:35 AM Some or all stock axle shafts taper down after the splines & also
have a raised & polished area for the diff seal to ride on. How is
this addressed by the axle shop doin' the work
Garza 12-12-2001, 08:39 AM I had my Longside inner Dana 60 front shaft cut and resplined by Moser about a month ago. They told me it was $50 on the phone. It turned out great, but I only had 1 prob. It cost me $7 to ship it to them from Fed-ex. When the axle arrived, I pulled the reciept off the box. They charged me $69. It said axle work was $50, shipping was $19. WTF? I got my axle back in a Fancy Ass colorful checkered Moser Engineering box. I paid about $12 for this Damn box. And trust me, there wasn't much handling involved, my axle was just laid in there with 1 piece of cardbord to hold it from moving around, then stapled up. I just think if you are a big business, you get shipping discounts right? Oh well, at least I got a cool logo to hang on the shop wall. :flipoff2:

They shorten the axle and then re-create the seal shoulder-NO SWEAT...:p  :D

okay, I guess I can do that... I was just hoping someone could tell me 'the shaft goes so far into the carrier...' or something like that.
I got this housing, third-hand, the 2nd hand didn't know how much it'd been narrowed, or didn't remember, now I don't remember... :D ... anyway, they did a good job on it, and the width was right so I bought it. Pinion was set for taller jeep than mine, forcing me to run *'d c-bushings AND drop brackets but WTF.:smokin:
Medusa 12-12-2001, 11:04 AM If you go to the Dutchman website they have an order form that describes the various ways in which you can measure for custom axle shafts (http://www.dutchmanaxles.com/dutchmanorders.pdf).
The easiest way (if you don't know the amount of reduction desired) is to measure from housing flange to housing flange. Knowing what kind of axle housing it is, the crew at Dutchman can figure the proper length.
