: tranny cooler placement
Violent91 10-06-2003, 02:59 PM I'm about to weld up my tranny cooler but i really dont want to put it in front of my radiator. Its about 9"x12"x2". How important is it that the cooler stays in front broadsided?
I have cut inner fenders so i kind of wanted to mount it parallel on the frame on the passenger side near the bottom radiator hose. I have alot of room there and it wont take away from the airflow of the radiator. (which is what i'm trying to avoid) But i also dont want an overheating slushbox if ya know what i mean.
Can I put this right above the frame? Will it still cool my th350 adequately? Where do yall suggest mounting it?
Old Scout 10-06-2003, 05:35 PM Put an electric fan on it and you can put it anywere.

I bypassed the cooler in the radiator for my TH350, and ran hydro hose up to a remote filter, over to a huge cooler on the fender, and back to the tranny with a 2 quart deeper pan as well, and my transmission never gets over 150 on the trails, don't know what I am going to do this winter, daily 25mile drive to work isn't getting it over 110!
Violent91 10-06-2003, 08:56 PM I thought about putting an electric fan on it, but thats just more crap for me to buy.
Mutt, is your tranny cooler on the inner fender in your engine compartment or in your wheel well?
Basically, will a tranny cooler do its job if its not broadside to outside airflow?

Hmm....i guess i'll do that then.
Fawk it. Fan is going on :) I've got 5 fans in my computer....i figure i might as well load up my truck too.
Do yall think that a 12x9x2 oil cooler from a burban will cool it pretty good? Its like a brand new tranny so i wanna take good care of it. should i run a remote filter too? how much is that gonna be?
Jrod-13 10-06-2003, 09:40 PM You should always run your tranny fluid through the radiator. The tolerances in a auto tranny are built for a certian degree of thermo expansion. If your tranny fluid is below that point, your just wearing out parts faster.
Also, if your tranny cooler is not in the stream of airflow from the engine fan, and doesn't have a its own fan, it is serving almost no purpose at low speeds.

Yeah. Thats what i figured. I guess i'll put a fan on it now.
Wideopen 10-07-2003, 02:28 AM Just stick it on the front of the radiator, After all thats where it was on the burban you got it off of. Those little cores wont render flow through the radiator that much, Not enough to worry about it..

Just curious, but why don't you want to put it in front of your radiator?
Starslope 10-07-2003, 12:05 PM I have never understood what's so difficult to comprehend with AIRCOOLED radiators. :flipoff2:
Well in cramped areas you can use the really trick watercooled radiators. Aluminium and XRP couplings.. bling bling.. There are models for both engine and tranny. And if you should happen to break your tranny you can reuse the watercooled radiator, but not the aircooled dito.
But I guess you didnt want to spend more money on it.
Violent91 10-07-2003, 12:59 PM I didn't want to put it in front of my radiator because i didnt want it to take away from the cooling of my engine. (i'm doing all i can to keep from having cooling problems)
I decided that i'll put a fan on it and put it where i originally wanted it.
Thanks guys.
