Ahhnuld Wins! Taco Poll Shows Victory for Schwarzenegger

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 2003--The people of California have spoken and eaten ... and it's Arnold they want. After a seven-week run, Taco Bell(R) today announced the final gubernatorial Taco Poll results with Arnold Schwarzenegger winning by a high margin of tacos. The candidate seized 81 percent of votes for the crunchy beef taco. The Grilled Stuft Burrito, representing 133 candidates, came in second with 13 percent of votes. Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, with the Chalupa, finished with 5 percent of votes, while Gov. Gray Davis, with the chicken soft taco, came in last place with 1 percent of votes. The historic Taco Poll, which allowed Californians to vote with their mouths, launched on August 21 and steadily held Schwarzenegger in first place six weeks of the seven.
Taco Bell also continues its week-long online Taco Debate through Election Day, which features participation from 30 gubernatorial candidates, including Angelyne and Gallagher. The unprecedented debate forum on www.tacobell.com kicked off last Tuesday with a question on education from Comedy Central's Ben Stein. Every day a new debate topic was presented on such issues as immigration, tax increases and automobile registration fees from interested voters. While only a few candidates could participate in the televised debates, Taco Bell offered the online forum to all candidate hopefuls to express their views and reach out to constituents before Election Day.

"The final Taco Poll results are in and they are calling for more beef in Sacramento," said Greg Creed, chief marketing officer, Taco Bell Corp. "While our Taco Poll and Taco Debate gave Californians a fun, `Outside The Bun' way to get involved in this state's race for Governor, we'll have to wait and see if our prediction rings true."

The Taco Poll allowed Californians to visit one of more than 1,000 restaurants to "put their vote where their mouth is" for their favorite gubernatorial candidate. Customers were encouraged to "buy votes" simply by purchasing selected Taco Bell(R) menu items. A crunchy beef taco counted as a vote for Schwarzenegger, a soft chicken taco counted as a vote for not recalling Davis, a Chalupa counted as a vote for Bustamante, and a Grilled Stuft Burrito counted as a vote for the remaining 133 candidates.

Customers could "Think Outside The Bun" and vote as many times as they liked at participating restaurants throughout California. Voters monitored weekly results, which were tallied every Tuesday, online at www.tacobell.com. To ensure fairness to all candidates, product results were calculated based on the incremental number of items sold.
