VT_Toy 10-06-2003, 08:00 PM Dell. Their tech support is in India, but so is everybody else
Get a good warranty.
Get an extra battery if you're going to actually use it portable.
Get a backup device - CD-R or Zip Drive - and start using it.

Yes. And laptops fail more than desktops.
I have a customer who just spent $3100 to get his data back from his dead hard drive.
MKBruin 10-06-2003, 08:06 PM I would say go AMD....but I HATE intel products. AMD runs cooler which helps with the life of teh processor, plus it is quicker, especially for teh types of programs you will use. Go with MIN 256 meg of DDR, I would go with 512 personally.
you can go cheap if you buy one without pre-installed software, including no OS.
for CHEAP, you can get a House Brand, more expensive, dell. stay away from gateway altogether.
also look into WinBook, not too expensive and very solid amchines.

any sites/stores that would have these?
MoonDog 10-06-2003, 10:28 PM My last laptop was a Dell inspiron and it served me well. Check out www.dell.com, they have a few laptops in your price range and are excelent machines. HP and Compac are also in your price range and the ones I've looked at generally come with more features for the money, but are pieces of shit as far as quality goes.
My main machine is a Sharp Actius laptop, does EVERYTHING except burn DVDs. The 15" screen measures as large as the 17" CRT I have on my desk, and is actually brighter. ...that and the 2.8 P4 and I have no complaints about running Solidworks on it:D
I'm a broke-ass college student too and the only reason I bought this thing is because I got it on Ebay for half the retail price:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Blame Canada 10-06-2003, 10:48 PM IMO, go to the listed manufacturers and search their site for a refurbished laptop. Modern, yet cheaper. Usually still comes with a waranty.
Worth a look.
CheapXJ 10-07-2003, 12:39 AM anything but HP/Compaq.
Dell, or Sony. Spend the coin on something WORTH the money.
Check out shopprostar.com too.

I'm sitting on a refur'd unit. $1150 for about $2500 worth of laptop with the same warranty as new. FWIW as I've said before we have both in our environment here and the refurb's have a lower failure rate than new. Course, they've been gone through twice as often

Honestly surprised to hear that. I'm on my 4th I believe and have had 0 hardware problems with them in that time.
My biggest complaint has always been design. Not build quality. I hate, no loathe the handling of drives. But thats just me. My wife now has mine and I have a new dell I'm happy with so far. Oh and the nipple kills me ;)

Thats what the one around our house is called:D
the hard drive is on its way to dying, and it has a new keyboard. Not too bad for a 4 year old machine.

Private party, and I got it for $1250. They were retailing for $2400-$2200. The auction felt really risky though, the listing had a picture of the laptop turned on and the description went someithing like "this laptop is made by sharp, you can see it in the picture, it works" I'm sure the vagueness of the listing deterred people from bidding on it. I never expected my bid to win the auction. after it did I was sweating untill it arrived, I tore into the box, looked it over and powered it up to make sure there was not some terrible flaw. It looked brand new, but the windows XP sticker had been taken off, oh well.

This is what we got just about a month ago. Love it. Great design and love the display. Checked around and heard a few gripes about customer service, but I haven't run into any issues. Biggest complaint and I agree is that it runs HOT. Don't set it on your lap for long. Battery doesn't hold up as long as the Dell lattitude D500 I have at work, but I really like the eMachines better. Better display, better layout, and runs software as well or better.
