: is this even remotely safe

doing an 1 1/2" to 2" lift on my 70 cruiser my dad believes that we could make them from 3/4" galvanized pipe. the basic idea is to place a chunk of rubber on the frame then a thick washer then the pipe then another washer then another chunk of rubber where the body sits put a bolt thur it all and tighten it down. for those i've lost i'll make a liitle diagram for you:D

body
rubber
washer
steel pipe
rubber
washer
frame

is this safe or just ghetto fab considering i can buy body mounts for $3-$5 a piece.

why not just use one piece of rubber? probably have less chance of lateral movement

When you figure in the price/time involved tracking down all new grade 8 bolts to replace the stock ones that are too short. Its much easier to just spend $65 on a real body lift.

Sounds like a very bad idea to me.
If you really want to make your own from pipe, use 2" non-galv & weld the big washers to the ends.
You can buy a body lift for most rigs for $60 - $80 new, or find some someone is removing.

thats exactly what i said can get 10 new poly bushings for $5 a piece so i'm at $50 and for now since i have quite a bit of work left will be using grade 5 bolts have a source thur work and all the nuts and bolts will be another $5-$10. but my dad thinks otherwise will definetly have to show him this ppost.

3/4" pipe, Don't waste your time, Just buy the body lift.
Body lifts are just one of those things, There so cheap to buy, It would cost me (inclueding time and effort) more to make the damn thing...

Unless you have access to a bucket of hockey pucks laying around, I would just buy the body lift kit. It's worth that much in bolts at the very least.

Personally, with the pipe and stuff I would not ride in your vehicle, if you roll or something you risk the chance of things breaking and people getting hurt. I would wait till you can do it right.

no way in hell was i going with the idea of pipe problem is that i'm a 2 banana fabricator my rig is parked at dads and it's the first time for me building a rig and he has built lots of stuff manly fast cars in his youth. add in my brother who is a great guy who knows alot about cars and engeenering(sp) but who has his own ideas of what i need to do and what i'm going to put my cruiser thur. i know that if i get some feedback from tried and trued folks it will help me to show dad that his idea is well meant but not sound.:D nothing against my dad but this is also his first 4x4 build and he like me is pulling ideas out of a$$ at times. building a cruiser with full width axles and all chevy has been a challenge to say the least but it is coming along well just like all the rest of you i just need more money. thanks for all your insit.

Body kit..do it right the 1st time!
Tell your dad if he does not listen to you, you will poke him with a sharp stick. My pop said this to me many times when he was right and I use it on my sons.....never had to jab either one as I have been always right so far and they listen well to experience....LOL

that is by far the stupidest thing I have ever seen someone put between the frame and the body of a vehicle....frankly chunks of wood are safer than silly ass PVC...

Why is this world so full of cheap fuckers that have no fucking clue....65$ on a body lift......get off your asses and get a second job at mcdonalds or something....anything but fuckin PVC....

Whats next....a PVC roll cage...?!?

You dumbasses...the PVC wall was 1/2" thick. And compared to the plastic ones I've seen, far superior in strength.

Gahead and talk out your asses all you want!! :flipoff2:

Last I checked. PVC is plastic? :flipoff2:

Why not use 2X4 pressure treated lumber.

Mr Roxy

I dont know about the whole plastic thing, but if I were you and didnt need the rig running yesterday, I would do anything I could to bypass any bodylift and just do suspension

Moron !!!
Try sticking one of your quality plastic pucks in a vise or press and give it a squeeze. Those cheap body lifts use plastic that has reinforcing ribs inside as well as fiber so they dont shatter under pressure.

tell ya what send me the money to ship some and I'll mail the 2 extra's that I have when I did my lift on my old s-10

Here is a good rule of thumb.

If you have to ask this question it generally is not.

Wall thickness is not your problem. Driven on the street only, they might work for a short period of time, but if you got into any type situation where you flexed your frame, the bolts would easily rip those washers out of the couplings. Also, schedule 40 PVC expands and contracts alot, and with exposure to the weather it becomes very brittle.

Not worth the risks to save a couple of bucks.

You are by far the dumest wheeler on the trial. Nice. I hope you body never shifts on your frame in the event that you roll. I know the mall parking lot can be scary so wear your seatbelt and all times and remember in event of water landing you seat becomes a float device.

First off, there really is no need for that kind of talk.

Second, I have seen a lot of shit in my days in the offroad community. But, I dont think I have ever seen anything quite as radiculous as what you have done.
Not only did you do it to your own rig. But, you made a web page about it and tried to get other people to do it. That is just asinine.

Yet, you have the audasity to critique someone b/c they left out ONE letter while typing.

Then shouldnt that make you feel like a real moron. A 20 year old "kid" has more sense than you do.

But, just for the record. I seem to have enough knowledge in the offroad world. I opened up a fab/offroad shop almost a year ago and it has been very successful.
This upcomming year I also plan on competing in NEUROC.

So, next time you think about running your PVC eatin mouth off, just go back into the water pipe you crawled out of and keep it shut.:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
