: 60 High pinion into WJ questions
Chewbacca 12-11-2001, 06:28 AM First, any idea who is capable of a technical install like this?
Would they cut my old brackets off the 30 to use for the 60? Which vehicle should I get a 60 off of so the width is similar to the 30?
I am in Michigan, anyone know of custom axle gurus up here?
I heard late 80s Ford 3/4 ton pickups are the ones I want, but not sure.
Please help!

RoCkSkuLLz 12-11-2001, 07:30 AM your not going to find a take out 60 that is the same width as your 30. You'll probably have to get it cut down or run a full-width, your choice. I wouldnt suggest cutting the old brackets off the 30 and re-welding them back on the 60. Just buy some Rubicon Express. I hear they make some heavy-duty ones that work good... I hope your going to run a descent size lift if you plan on stuffing that hog under the front. Not sure how clearence issues are on WJ's... Good luck :D
ExtremeCJ 12-11-2001, 08:27 AM I do not think you will ever need to put a 60 under a WJ because you cannot put big enough tires to make it useful, what is the biggest tire you would put under your truck, a 35 inch. with a 35 inch you do not need the 60, a 44 with warn outer shafts, a good set of dutchman or moser shafts for inners, and CTM u-joint you will never have a issue. once you go to 37's or 38's you need a 60. if you want to get a good comrimise between a 60 and a 44 look at the Teraflex 50r. it is a dana 50 which uses most dana 44 gears and lockers and dana 60 shafts and u-joints. it seems like a winner and you will not lose any more clearence than you have now with your 30
Chewbacca 12-11-2001, 08:57 AM Damn, now I should change the topic. If a 44 is cool for 33s (35s max) on my WJ what are some good sources for those? Scout II, Early Broncos, Wagoneers?
How about a reverse cut 44 under that WJ?
RoCkSkuLLz 12-11-2001, 09:12 AM I've got an 82' waggy D44 in the front of my YJ and it was about the same length (61-62 inches) it is 6-lug bolt pattern. Great front axle, Its taken some serious abuse with my 38.5's already no breakage yet :D And its got 5.13's and a full spool :D
Po' riggity 12-11-2001, 12:33 PM Im with everyone else in this post.. you don't really need a 60.. heck, Im gonna be running 36's on my yj with a 44 front.. reverse cut high pinion out of a 70's ford truck.. its already got 4.10's, even though Im going to either 4.56's or 4.88s.... just needs a locker and disc brake conversion, and technically I could slap it under there.. Go with a 44 front.. you won't need any more than that.

Jakesteramalamajama 12-11-2001, 12:41 PM Ditto. A 44 will do fine under there with 35s.

SeanP 12-11-2001, 05:50 PM am I missing something here?!?!?
2001 WJ wanting a front axle swap? Not to rain on your parade because it wasn't that long ago that folks gave me shit for building a 97XJ, but a WJ? You will need to go about 7" of lift and need to trim like crazy just to fit 35s. And I mean trimming that will just hack the shit out of the nice lines of the Grand. Do you have the Quadradrive system? If so, have you wondered why there isn't much in the way of lift kits for this rig? It's because the Quadradrive doesn't do very well with the drive angles of a 6" lift. Stock WJs are having problems with Quadradrive quite a bit, I wouldn't fuck with it too much. Plus, why start with the front? Your rear aluminum hybrid 44 is going to bear much more loads and would be a good place to look at an axle swap before doing the front.
If you are really intent on wheeling this rig do the lift and 35s first and get that dialed in. Buy a couple of spare front shafts and just stay there. Maybe a TJ or a YJ would be a better project for you.
Oh yeah, and another thing :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
66CJdean 12-11-2001, 05:59 PM A 50 and a 44 are not even the same thing. 44 is 8.5" ring gear and a 50 is 9" so nothing for the 44 as far as lockers and gears is going to work.
If you want a RC44 then the 3/4 ton 77.5-79 are good ones to use and so are the 1/2 ton ones but they have a fair amount of crap welded to the tubes. I think a 44 will be plenty for what you want to do and then use all the $$$ you saved on something else.
Chewbacca 12-11-2001, 06:00 PM Here's 33s with no trimming yet Bitch! This is not my rig to set the record straight...

ExtremeCJ 12-11-2001, 07:49 PM 66CJ Dean,
Actually you are wrong, Like i said a TERAFLEX 50r will accept most dana 44 gears and lockers. if you still don't believe me check tera's site, www.teraflx.com
here is a quote:
The Tera50R lends itself for use in the front where ring and pinion strength is improved by changing to a high-pinion axle. Tera50R front axles are equipped with 1-ton capacity knuckles and U-joints to eliminate common sources of breakage.
The Tera50R is also an ideal, high-pinion rear replacement axle for Dana 44 owners because most components from the Dana 44 can be used in the Tera50R. Axle shafts, brake kits, yokes, and carriers can all be swapped over to the new housing.
66CJdean 12-11-2001, 07:52 PM I guess you are right about the Terra 50 but a Dana 50 like in Fords is not the same.
