While day dreaming in class, i've been thinking of a pretty sweet trail rig. what if you took a cheap sammy with no motor, put a 2.3 carbed trooper motor, tranny, and tcase, which can all be picked up for cheap, a 12bolt rear welded, and a toy mini axle up front. it should have plenty of width, pretty good power although its not a big motor its still going from a 1.3 lawn mower motor to a 2.3. besides the work of swaping everything, the parts could be picked up for pretty cheap and i dont' think you would ever have to worry about breaking an axle, and if its a concern just get some longfields for the front. any feed back to this plan :flipoff2:

side note: what are isu. 12bolt axles worth, out of old troopers?

The sammies engine bay is pretty cozy...

fawk the carb, buy a $200 sammy, a $200 crusty trooper w/ a 2.6 efi, and a yota front. with the later model troop you'd get the mua5 and throw in some 3:1's. Might be more work to mess with the wiring, but prolly worth it.

Or get the carb'd 2.3 and go the the forklift graveyard and get some propane parts..... :evil:

what tcase came with the 2.3? do they not make tera lows for it? if not keep the stock sammy divorced case and run dual, although that would make a long drivetrain in a short truck.

I dunno what the deal is with the 2.3 troopers. Everything else seems to be different. I assumed the trans/case was too.

BTW those sammy t-cases are cool. 1.75:1 reduction in hi for the sand, and down to 6:1 lows available.

yeah i think i could live with a 360.53.1 crawl ratio :eek: man would that be sweet. how strong are the sammy cases? think they could take the abuse? paul i think thats what your next truck should be, hell you'd only have about 600 into buying all the drivetrain parts, then more for the overkill gearing... just find an old trooper doner truck, you know you can find one of those for cheap. theres a sammy body and chase on nc4x4 for only 100, i can get you a toy axle...... isn't it fun to dream :idea:

Been thinking about it, and the only thing about running a twin case setup that I can't get around, is how do you get rid of the front output of the front case without cutting/welding? I guess you could do it ghetto and run a tranny/case with a drivers side output in front and then it wouldn't be in the way.

Wait a minute...aren't nissan's drivers drop? And don't they have a divorced case? Hmm. Then you could run a mua5 to the divorced nissan case, but you'd have to get a drivers-side pumpkin front diff. most of them are full-width besides the later model waggies. But those waggies are weaker right? Fawk.

OK, from searching, it doesn't look like the sammy cases would hold up to the extra power and weight :nuke: . Plus they have a pass-side rear output on their cases, not centered. And I had the number wrong. sammy hi-range reduction is only like 1.25 or 1.3:1. the 6:1's cost like a grand too. still its cool.

It might hold up though, you never know. I'd keep the engineat stock power (which would still be double the size and power of the sammy 1.3). you could run the axles from a quadratrac 70's waggy, the rears are offset to the pass-side. early land cruisers are, too, I think.

Also it seems like people have trouble with lots of driveline vibes running divorced cases. But with careful planning and a little finnese, I'm sure things could work out fine.

paul if you want to go ghetto on a divorced case, what about running a small shaft at an angle from the tranny to the divorced case to try to make the drive shaft go under the old output. ? i might be possible with a cv shaft, but i'm no expert on running divorced cases, someone who is please chime in at anytime :) it might work on a truck with a longer wheelbase, but diff. not a sammy.

another thing i've been dreaming of was running a divorced toyota case on my trooper, and what i was thinking was, would it be possible to just bolt the flang from the divorced toy to the flang from the isuzu output and not run a shaft? the point would be to keep the driveline as short as possible and rear d shaft as long as possible. i'd have to cut weld the front output though on the isuzu case.

It used to be in Atlanta, but it got moved to Miami. Runs like stink. They had to use the 4 speed Isuzu because of length. The Isuzu 10 bolt was cut down to fit under the Sammy. I've got more pictures of it on that Albumn, if your good at snooping.
It was built for taking pictures in Africa. Cameramounts on both doors, along with Rino plates on the rides. And spent many months there before being retired back to the US.

If anyone is serious I can put you in contact with the engineer who built it.
