View Full Version : Looking for info on a D-90

I picked up a '94 D-90 last month for a good price, a damn good price. The previous owner died and his family didn't know what they had. I snapped it up sight unseen. I had been drooling over a friend's D-90 for a while and this one dropped in my lap. On to the questions.
They had some of the paperwork on it so I can see some of its history. About 2 years and 2,000 miles ago it seems to have had a whole new tranny and t-case put in. What's weird about it is it doesn't seem to be a Defender t-case. There appears to be no lock for the center diff. You can slap the t-case shifter back and forth all you want and nothing happens. It does shift from high down to low range no problem but it's reversed from normal. i.e. forward is high range and back is low range. The gearbox shift pattern is the standard left-and-up for reverse. Can anybody give me any insight as to what kind of tranny I've got so I can track down the right repair manuals?
Thanks,
Tony

Reverse to the left and up is an LT77S... Transfer case is confusing... probably an LT230 with the linkage not all hooked up? Or maybe the guy had a Borg Warner swapped in? A pic of the case would tell for sure.

Neither of those would explain why hi-range is in the forward position though...
I'd like to see a pic of what's under that thing.

Let's just say in the mid teens. ;)
It had the afore mentioned tranny replacement (of which I'll get pics tonite for those asking). The family had a mechanic look it over and he replaced the clutch master cylinder, had a convertible shop replace the windows in the soft top(it looks almost new), the seats were replaced after they were stolen while sitting at the shop overnight, and a few other not so cheap parts were replaced. It's not a perfect specimen. Around 100,000 miles, AC only works on high, heater fan doesn't work at all(my next project with winter coming), a small love dent from god-knows-where, and a cracked windshield. Luckily these are all relatively easy and not too expensive repairs.
The family says he had a safari rack for it but they haven't come across it in his warehouse yet, but they're sure it's there. I'm hoping they do find it. That'll save me a bit of $$$ and be well worth the 6 hour round trip drive to get it.

Here ya go. It's a little greasy. Kinda hard to get a pic of the whole thing without a lift. There is no way that I see to lock it. Someone told me they think it could be off of a Rangie or a Disco.

Thats definitely a LT230... the linkage has me curious though.

The locking mechanism turns a shaft sticking out the top of the box near the front to the left of center. This is basically directly under the shift lever. Open the center access panel to have a looksy. The high/low might be possible to install with the upper link upside down which would give reverse actuation.

OK, here is a picture of mine as looking through the center access cover between the seats....
Diff lock pushes out to the right on the top of a pivot bar. The bottom of the bar turns a pin 90 degrees or so on top of the case. The high/low rotates on the lever shaft pushing a bar which rotates another shaft on the box.

Interesting. I'll pull the cover and take a look this weekend and take pics while I'm in there.
Thanks for the pic of yours, Red90rover.

Well, I see what's going on now for those that were curious. After spending an hour to figure out how to remove the interesting cubby box I was able to access the top of the tranny. There is no pivot point for the diff lock and the high/low selector is connected straight to the selector on top of the transfer case without the pivot point in front of the diff lock arm. I've included pics for those who'd like to see how this was done. The shop that did this was supposed to be a Rover specialist.

Thanks for your help there guys and especially Red90rover for the pic so I knew what I was looking at. Now to find the parts to make this a 'whole' transmission. I can rest assured that this hasn't been put into diff lock since the transmission was replaced. :)

Cool. and you need to swap of the top high/low link. If you remove the gear shift boot you'll have better access. If rally strapped, then the tranny tunnel. I'm not sure how hard that is to get off.
The pivot pin should not be much, even if genuine. There is nothing to it.

You might want to place the vent tube on the upper opening because you're allowing debris to contaminate your transfer case. From what I see on the picture the vent tube is attatched to a sensor port. You will need to find something to plug it with.

Vent tube is the same as in the red90rover pic.
