: Las Cruces Update
Azrckcrawler 12-11-2001, 11:33 AM Long story but we made it to Las Cruces on Sunday, had a great time with Bill and Tim (only Sammies that showed up) and the rest of the group. Here's a couple teaser shots till I can get everything posted to my site. Nothing hardcore  Oh and make sure your potato chips are secured before trying to climb waterfalls :D

Cool Chevy Luv.
I let Tim go fourwheelin' without me and look what happens! Y'all flip him over!
That's the same insane waterfall that I see in almost all of the Las Cruces pictures and video. Did anybody make it?
Looking forward to seeing the pictures.... since I couldn't go.:( :( :(
Azrckcrawler 12-11-2001, 03:40 PM Tim made it. The rocks on the last couple of falls were so polished from the competitions and traffic that traction was pretty much non-exsitant. Everywhere else it was amazing, you could put your tire anywhere and climb. I tried twice and then took a strap on the fall where Tim went over. Only the trip leader made the next one. Both Tim and myself were on the verge of making it. I felt better when I pulled the Luv up and over, it was one nasty ledge. I'll have pictures and the whole story up tommorow on my site.

Yep, check out the sticker on the front of the Luv:

The only vehicles on Sunday that didn't have Toy axles were the Jeeps, Fatkid would have been proud. Posted the pictures to my site this morning, have at em.
scwafish 12-12-2001, 06:25 AM Great pics! Glad to see some of you hooked up and had fun.
RoCkSkuLLz 12-12-2001, 07:49 AM Nice zuks!! :D
0ILBURNER 12-12-2001, 07:52 AM Mission ACCOMPLISHED!
We made it back to Memfrica last night after having driven in the rain for 10 hours:rolleyes: Other than feeling a bit haggard this morning, we're none the worse for wear.
Can't quite say the same for the rig, tho:D
Here's a list of the carnage:
Custom arc to both lower control arms (they didn't fold up, tho)
Tore front lower mount completely off - mangled the mount and snapped a 5/8" bolt. A little creative engineering w/ a BFH and Max's on-board welder & I was back in action.
Rear Samurai springs on front are done.
(they're doin' the wave)
Good dent in the front diff. housing.
Put a good crease in the driver's door (enough that it won't open)
Got dents in pretty much all the sheetmetal on the front - headlight bucket, both fenders, 2 places on the hood from the rollover.
We DEFENITELY had a LARGE time!:D
My most Sincere THANKS to Max Bennet and Bill Johnston for their hospitality - we'll be Back!
bertha 12-12-2001, 09:57 AM OILBURNER GETS IT! great driving Tim. Had fun, sorry I was not up to par just yet. Will be doing some major wrenching this weekend though. Sorry PROJSAM I did not get to wheel with ya. I have pics but my scanner is giving me troubles right now. The first day we ran Tobasco Twister. I will try and get them loaded here soon. Max Bennet, thanks for the hospitality :D I will have pics of his rig too.
0ILBURNER 12-12-2001, 10:03 AM When I saw that Max was carrying an onboard welder and had such a great attitude, I pulled out all the stops to see what my rig was capable of!
It was great to meet ya Bertha, as well as Greg "It's Not a Toyota".
I can't wait to do it again!:D
billjohn 12-12-2001, 01:02 PM It was great seeing you guys down here (in the middle of nowhere) Las Cruces! Glad you all made it back with all your parts. Next time I'll bring more axles (hehehe). :flipoff2:
billjohn 12-12-2001, 01:10 PM Oh, rumor has it that Greg (not-a-yota) may be going to Dana 60's soon... Max offered to set him up.

Yea, yea, yea...
Believe it or not, that was the first axle shaft I ever broke. The rest have been birfields... one day my 'little' zook will grow up. One day... :skull:

Thanks for the good words but take a closer look at some of the links. All of the tech and trail articles are actually pieces that I wrote for other websites (ORC/Suzuki and iZook.com). So, although you can get there from my page, they actually reside somewhere else... Gotta give them the credit for publishing them.
As for the state of your zook, the trails down here range from 'dirt easy' to extreme. The best time to check them out is during the Chile Challenge in February. All trails are run just about every day of the event. Bone stock zooks can really suprise you, even on the 'moderate' trails. Your zook should be able to take most of the trails out here (after taking a look at your site), it just depends how attached you are to the sheet metal {grin}. Hope to see you there! :flipoff2:
scoobydann 12-13-2001, 09:22 PM Billjohn, always nice to see someone from these parts, always nice to wheel w/ new people. scoobydann@aol.com ..hit me up

TNToy 12-14-2001, 07:44 PM Looks like Mr. Burner had fun out there. I can certainly believe you drove in rain for 10 hours. I thought I lived in Memphrica, not Seattle. We actually haven't been able to go trail riding round memphis for 3 weeks cause all the rails I ride are near the river, and the water table has been too hihg. :(
As soon as I get my axle swap done I'm gonna try and see what I can do about scaring up a tow rig and going ridin' with you and Tim some time... I've laid the 4Runner on it's side since you saw it up in Kentucky, so I'm not so attached to the sheetmetal as I used to be. Except for the Drivers door - you gotta have one straight panel, right? :D
Billjohn: From the way I've seen CSR drive, sheetmetal isn't his biggest concern. CSR - did you get any body damage from the wash you tried up at L.B.L.?

Dang Evan! How'd that happen? What's bent? Everything? ;)
I don't think I got any damage from LBL, just lost a little rollcage paint.
My junk is so thrashed now, when I get a dent, it's usually on top of a another dent. I kinda smoothed out the left side at Tellico a few months back..... instead of several dents, I now have one big one from front to back! :D
Have you started on the SAS yet?
TNToy 12-15-2001, 11:08 PM Dang Evan! How'd that happen? What's bent? Everything? ;)
Technically, "laid it on it's side" is a bit decieving - since you automatically think of a rig on it's side on level terrain. Actually, it was off camber about 45* to the passengers side, and it was just a single tree about 12" dia. I laid up against it (it stopped it from rolling - I think?) right on the passengers-side mirror, and then proceeded to drag it down the right side of the truck. It did make a nice pivot point to rotate the truck around and get it facing straight down the hill.
Before surveying damage:
<font color="yellow">
Me : "It's not that bad... I don't think"
Bro: "Uh... I can't open my door"
</font>
After surveying the damage next morning (was dark & mud covered when it was dented):
<font color="yellow">
Me : "It's not that bad."
Bro: "Well, My door works now that we punched it out... But then I see at least five football sized dents and it's all scratched to hell! Plus that window's gone. How is this not that bad?!"
Me: "The gas door's still straight."</font>
I don't think I got any damage from LBL, just lost a little rollcage paint.
Okay... that confirms that. I thought you'd told me it was the cage that stopped ya.
Have you started on the SAS yet?
Nope. :( Hopefully Jan-Feb time frame. It's finances that are limiting me, though... not anything else. Soon as I get the check from a company I did some web design for, I'll be off to the races... er.. torch.
After that, it's just a latter of finding a tow rig for this thing, I suppose. Or buy a ton of spare parts in case I blow something in my daily driver Yota. Soon as I get out of college, though, I'm making this sucker into a Sammy/Yota hybrid with my axles, drivetrain & crawler, lockers, and steering box, and a hella beefy exo-cage. I think it would look pretty bad ass to have a SamYota rolling around with 37s... (Kinda a conglomeration of rudezuks right with fatkids axles, now that I think about it) and maybe a 4Runner badge on the tailgate.
I'm just tired of all the compromises you have to make with a daily driver 'wheeler (no boggers, have to go a little easy, etc.)
BTW - I painted my Runner flat tan / flat black trim. Looks hella cool - and hides the dents.
