: Polishing a turd?

Mace's thread on centering a cruiser axle reminded me of this one... :flipoff2:

So, just cause I'm a little 'overextended' with all of the big ticket items I just had ot buy for the cruiser, I was planning on running something like a Taco V6 e locked third in the rear of the cruiser, about $800 or so... I could get a 6 lug Chevy SF 14 bolt (a little smaller, lighter, there's an elocker and arb option for it, but still beefy), disk brakes, cable ebrake, for about $600, then another $200 to have it narrowed plus locker I'm looking at about $1200. For now, I just threw a IFS mini 4 banger axle underneath. I seems to be right around the perfect width. It's 58.5" WMS-WMS, the FJ55/40 is ~55.5" not 53" like someone had said. Right about the width I'd like to be for a DDer... But, problem is I don't think it'll hold up. Trucks 60:1 about, the Cummins, NV4500 NP241.. I was thinking in my mind, a lot of guys would run this with a land cruiser rear axle. If i put a V6 3rd (aka an e-locker from a taco) it would probably be stonger than a LC rear end, but how strong? I could also do that Front Range Off Road full floater kit with the chromo axles etc, but that's about another $1G done and told. So I'd be $1500 into to but would keep a toy rear axle. Axles for me are probably my last big ticket items, as in probably maybe in the next year or so uipgrade to 1-ton. For now I'm not sure what I want to do, front is more or less done other than I might throw a locker in it, maybe a cable locker :D But the rear i'm not sure, key thing being cost. Rear axle strength wise is much more important for hauling gear, maybe some towing. But I don't want a heavy ass axle in the rear with the toy front.

Comments and ideas?

Build a 9 inch ford, lots of axle ratios, stronger than God, you can get 35 spline axles for them....way lighter than a D60 or 14 bolt either.....like weight is a problem with a Cummins up front

Nice find Butch! Depending on what it goes to, that might be my new axle. Just bought and did all new brakes on the mini one too

Also, Cummins is 100lbs less than the 2f :D But I like the ford idea, what are they out of, any ford? Is there a 4.10 model out of the box and any tips on finding one?

Wander over in the Ford forum, the only thing you really need to be concerned is the size of the outer brgs, you don't want the small car brg.
As far as 4.11 factory, they were rare, some of the Econolines, but gear sets are cheap and a blind one armed monkey can set a 9 inch up, of course the full floater looks promising, I am almost positive that is out of a Toy motorhome, and it is almost certainly 4.11.
Looks like the huge bolt pattern deal on it bolts on to the drum, so it should not be a huge deal to get that changed to 6x5.5 bolt pattern.

Nah, that's a minitruck diff. I think it's a 1-ton minitruck rear-end.

Spring perches look 90 degrees off.

Bingo! We have a winner. That's a 1-ton dually axle, we have several stake bed trucks in our Horticultural dept that have that axle in it. Yup, they're SUA just like Cruisers.

No, look a little closer, they're there. You're seeing the anti-swaybar mounts. Notice the mount for the LSPV rod, that's a dead giveaway it's from a mini-truck.

Andre, I can probably get you a Ford 9 inch. Just let me know, and if it still there I'll go get it. But one thing you have to consider with the 9 inch and that is it has a very low pinion ouput.
So if you have a long driveline you'll probably be OK. But the shorter one would cause you to have to really point the pinion way up there. But the option with the 9 inch housing is Currie's reverse 9 inch (8.8" in reality). But maybe a future option??

Give me call or email me.
Probably call. Email's down for some reason.

Thanks guys, I know about the Ford low pinion. Kruzertek definetely might take you up on that for sure... I've actually 'searched' about the different Toy, Ford, and even 14 bolt rear ends... Ford does have that low pinion. You can use Toy rotors and hubs on that FF rear axle, problem is a I think it's pretty wide WMS-WMS not sure though, I'll check it out tomorrow. It's a 8" centered rear, definetely a Toy 1-ton :) KLF the land cruiser mini truck, such a lurker :)

Personally, I'd go with that centered 1ton Toyota axle.... The lug pattern will be big though.

But you know me... weird axles and all... :D

that toyota rear can be modified to fit the bearings are the same as the front bearings a in a cruiser axle if tis the axle i am thinking of! BJOWETT on the mini section is running one with standard 6 lug rims and disc rear.

I have pic of his setup. its sweet! the discs were fronts and the hubs were fronts aswell, but you could use cruiser rear hubs and not need the spacer!

Been searching in all the mini truck forums, that thing DOES look killer but closer look makes it look pretty wide too. Anyone happen to know the width of it? I got an email from the guy, will probably go check it out Monday :)
