2001gtboy 12-11-2001, 06:24 PM Hey guys, this seems like a pretty information filled and active site so i figured i would register. Here is my projectRusty (http://www.rusty.stangnet.com) What do ya'll think? RIght now i just want to get the engine to run, so my first plan is to get the block, manifold and head acid soaked to bring them back to new. What else would i need to do after that, to get her running?
thank you

well i basically it depends on what you actually plan to do with it but regaurdless it seems to me the first thing on the list would be start busting rust! get a wire wheel cup attachment for a 4 1/2" grinder and have fun. :D

Bgcj5 12-12-2001, 06:18 PM One of the first things that u want to do is box and strap that frame if you plan on doing any wheeling. they are prone to cracking and breaking.

Sorry, not fimiliar with those terms. I plan on sanding the body, then ghetto painting it.
Bgcj5 12-12-2001, 07:00 PM The frame on that is in the form of a c what u want to do is weld a plate onto that c so that is looks like a box. then what u want to do is put some plates on the top and botom of the frame to give it more strength. As a side not be sure to do any welding on a diagonal as if u weld vertical it creates a seam and the metal tends to crack around it.
2001gtboy 12-12-2001, 07:03 PM i still don't under stand, do you have picture you could e-mail me? highoctane69@hotmail.com
RedBarron 12-12-2001, 11:46 PM If your gonna box the frame...throw away that motor and
slap a bigger motor in it. I have a 350 in mine, It's a tight fit but it works.

Or you might consider getting an entirely new frame out of a later CJ or a YJ. CJs are partially boxed and YJs are fully boxed. Depends on what kinda shape the original frame is in...

Basically what he's saying is that you need to reinforce the frame considerably. If you can't weld yourself, have a good 4x4 shop do it.
If you're a decent welder, take a gander at the frame and you'll see what you need to do.
Brian1 12-13-2001, 06:19 PM Here is what he is talking about strapping the frame: FRAME STRAP (http://members.home.net/42gpw/strapframe.jpg) the 2" metal strap on top of the frame is being stitch welded to the frame. I will have pictures in about a week of boxing the frame. I will e-mail a link to you later. Did you ever figure out what engine is in it?
2001gtboy 12-13-2001, 06:44 PM no, but a few people hinted towards a FOrd......
Steve N 12-14-2001, 12:44 AM The first thing you need to do is pick up a brand new body kit from me... J/K I just got a ripping deal on three new body kits. I can sell a complete body except grill for $1400.
2001gtboy 12-14-2001, 05:58 AM whats the body made of? im not femiliar with very many thing in the 4x4 world so im not quite sure what a body kit is. Where do you live? My friend and i were thinking of sanding down the current body, get rid of all the rust, then spry paint it some color or another. Along weith probably getting the frame reinforced, but i dunno about cost on that.
emsoffroad 12-14-2001, 07:42 PM A cj2a will have a welded frame, made up a bunch of smaller peices. If you are going o use it I would swap out the frame for something else.
Supergper 12-15-2001, 10:51 AM I would forgfet about the whole boxing the frame idea and just replace the frame with a YJ or TJ frame...then possibly do a body kit or if you feel like chasing rust all the time keep the body work on it and then work on it some more...really I would keep the body and turn it into a beater/rockcrawler:D:D:D
Hey Steve N. how much would shipping on one of those kits be to 84044 I am going to be putting a willys body on my YJ frame...and can you always get them for a good deal or is this a rarity(sp?) cause that is a smokin deal:D...thanks

I really just want to kill all the rust, spry paint it some camo colors and leave it as a beat me body.......if i just sanded down all the rust then painted it, would that work?
Supergper 12-15-2001, 04:49 PM Originally posted by 2001gtboy

Well if its all surface rust then sure but I seriously doubt it is not just surface rust...if it is then you got yourself a good catch...a lot of the times when you get into doing some body work like this you end-up needing to grind and cut out panels and make new ones and weld them back into place and then you also have the under carage that poses to be a big problem on older vehicles...infact your floor boards are prolly rotted out:D good luck but hey its always fun($$$) to have a project around:D:D:D
2001gtboy 12-18-2001, 06:21 PM WELL AFTER LOOKING AT THE POOR THING TODAY, AFTER ITS ARRIVAL HOME. (damn caps) ive come to the conclusion a new body may be in order. ill post some pics on my site tomrow.
Po' riggity 12-18-2001, 06:51 PM Looks like you are gonna have your hands full with this project! Looks like fun though. If it were mine, Id just start over... get a glass body on a yj frame, using yj springs and all... keep the motor or toss it, thats up to you, and you need to decide what kinda power you are looking for.

the light weight and short wheelbase of the jeep does not make for a good tow vehicle.

well it may need to see a few good road trips possible towing or not/ each year, but for the summer it will see lots of towing! just in and out of the water. Our lake house has lots of boats that a my damned family is always needed to have brought to local shops and stuff. i used our cj8 and pre-cj2a flatfender, and they both did pretty well.
Karl Andraschko 12-20-2001, 02:39 PM As far as the original question went...
I agree with the suggestion that frame work should come first, you don't want to put all that time and money into the body just to have the frame crack and fold the tub in half at the doors.

BillaVista 12-21-2001, 11:34 AM It seems that it has sentimental value, and is a great old jeep, so i vote for a restoration, or partial restoration rather than building a hardcore rig...but it's your Jeep.

I have a thing for flat fenders...though I have never owned one
2001gtboy 12-21-2001, 06:39 PM while i think total restoration would be nice, its probably even more of a haul and longer/expensive process then just getting it to work and be useful. although those links are all great. i visited them all. may i also say, get your self a flatfender!!!!!!!!
WideJ 12-21-2001, 06:45 PM a buddy of mine just finished his 2.5 year project of restoring an m-38. just make sure you know what you're getting into. lots 0 time and lots o money. but it sure feels good when the ideas trun into a reality!
MKBruin 12-23-2001, 11:24 AM ok.....you said yourself that bodywork doesn't matter so here are teh steps I would take:
1) YJ frame. $400 at a local junkyard for me and they always have 'em.
2) axles. big tires, lift, and a strong engine are nothing if you keep breaking axles. choices range from 44's to 9 inch to 60's to 70's to 14 bolt's to mogs to rockwells.......personal prefrence and availability. I personally would go wagoneer 44 front/60 rear. goal $500/pair after rebuild
3) engine. chevy 350 is probably the most redaly available and has the largest aftermarket support for the swap. total swap cost $800 min.
4) lift springs. I would go with 2.5 or 3.5 inch lift springs sprung over if using the yj frame and strong axles. even a set of jc whitney factory replacements can get you into 36's with trimming.
5) bodywork. unless you are falling through the floor at 40 mph I wouldn't be too concerned with the body. sand off surface rust and paint it od green.
it sounds like a project but remember.......despite your blood, sweat and tears from workin on it and handing over ALL your money........it's worth it in the end.
Karl Andraschko 12-23-2001, 05:22 PM And make sure not to worry to much about getting it right the first time, work a little, wheel alot, work a little, wheel alot, find out what it's going to take to get you down your trails. Improve your driving skills as well as you rig to match (and exceed) your challenges.

As Brad said it's a rarity. At $1400 that's more than 50% off what JC Whitney, or other BIG mail order places charge. The body's an M38 by the way. Shipping should be around $150 I would guess.
