Hey all. I've got a patio cover I need to do some work on. It covers a 16'x55' area. the main pieces are perpindicular to the house, extending the 16 feet.

currently, I've got that normal lattic work stuff on top of it for shade. I've also got some areas with shade cloth on it. it works well.

the lattic work is old and starting to come apart. I need to replace it, but I don't really wanna use the lattic work. its just kinda flimsy and you can tell its just gonna come apart again.

what I was thinking of doing is putting 1x1's on the top. I am just trying to figure out what kinda spacing i should have between the 1x1's I'm thinking like 3 inchs between each board, so the 1x1's are spaced 4" on center. is that to tight? to spread out? thanks

sb

Why not use PVC lattice? Home Depot or Lowes carries it in colors and even a light green that looks like treated lumber. A friend used it to enclose the area under their deck.

you know, I didn't even think about that. but, I dunno if that would stand up to the constant heat from the sun all day everyday.

A lot will depend on the color you choose. Also it's best to make a 2x4 frame for each section of lattice.

then it wouldn't be right for this. I've got a 16x55 area to cover, that alot of frames. I think I'll still go with the 1x1's. do you think 4" on center is to close?

Depends on how much shade you want. You're going for a viga (sp?) type thing with the 1x1s running perpendicular to the rafters right?

It'll last longer than most species of wood thats untreated ;) They also sell wood lattice. I hate making lattice.

How about 1" DOM tubing. It's not like you don't know how to make something with that?:flipoff2:

right I'm going perpendicular with the 1x1s. I have shade cloth that I am going to be putting on top of it. so the wood isn't going to be the only thing blocking the sun. I guess I'd want just as much shade from the 1x1s that I've got from the existing wood latice work.

I would space them 1-2 inches apart for maximum shade

You could cover the top with a chicken wire then put some sort of thin bamboo (or something else) on top of that.. Just a suggestion.
