I was wondering, where do you go to get a flywheel resurfaced? I need mine done ASAP. I was thinking of checking around at machine shops, but that just dosent sound right.

Thanks....

Most machine shops are set up to do it....check under your auto parts stores in town...not pep boys or that kind...those that do rebuilding will say machine shop also.:D

Yup, just about any machine shop can do it...
You might want to go to a shop that specializes in automotive work.
If you live in a town of more than 20K people, you should have at least one shop like this in town.

Cory

Oh, all the good parts stores will know where these shops are.

Why do you need to re-surface it... ?? If its not bad I've just taken a wire wheel and cleaned it up... worked for me.. But now im auto so no more worries about that stuff :D

If you have it apart, you might as well do it right and re-surface the flywheel. Either a machine shop or a transmission shop can do this for you. Runs anywhere from $35 - $50. :skull:

You can buy a new one from a parts store for about $40. Easier and quicker.

A new one from a parts store sounds like a viable option to me. Especially since I waited about 4 MONTHS to get my tranny from any gueses????

Anyway, I am dying to get my truck running.

PS. I was looking into getting one of those heavier flywheels but I couldnt find one for less than 250!!! HOW THE HECK can anyone charge that much for a dang chunk of metal! No moving parts, nothing!

Kinda like rotors! They are 30 buck, but with HOLES IN THEM they are like 100 to 150!

DUMB!

Do not wire wheel your flywheel just cuz it looks good.
Flywheels are like brakes...
Over the course of time, the friction material fills in the holes of the surface and produces a glaze that you can not see.
Also wears down the surface and if you have a "stepped" flywheel surface this will mess up your applied pressure as the pressure plate mounting surface will not wear!
So, you need to have a small amount machined from the surface to restore the "porosity" of the metal and thus the friction surfaces ability to "grab".
Same general ideas apply to brake rotors and drums.:D

A $40 flywheel ??????
Are you sure you are not talkjing about a "flex-plate"

Why does it cost $$$$$$$$$?
Someone has to buy the machine and pay an operator to use it
$35-50 sounds about right to resurface a flywheel.

Cory

Do it right or don't bother:emb:

Yep....I just picked up a reman. flywheel from Kragen for my 460 for $35. I couldn't beleive it...I thought for sure when I ordered it it was gonna come in and they were gonna say uhhh gee were sorry we thought you wanted a flex plate. But nope it came in and it was a brand new lookin' flywheel, freshly machined with a new ring gear. I doubt you could get one machined and put a new ring gear on it for less than that.

It did have a $95 core charge but I just gave em' an old POS flywheel and they refunded it.
