: 350 into scout 80
61scout80 10-13-2003, 04:55 PM i've been searching and haven't found much. so now i post
i have a 61 scout 80 w/ a 4 cyl 3 speed combo. it doesn't have fuel injection, i want fuel injection. i bought a 90ish 350 tbi, 700r4 and a transfer case (haven't determined what it is yet), all are good. i also have (2) dana 18 t-cases and (1) dana 300 t-case. i would like to use the 300, but the adapter is pricey. i also have access to the fabrication, i'm not the best, but i do have friends w/ decent shops that would help me where needed. so i got a few questions.
1) what radiator have you used?
2) what have you used for a shifter?
3) how far forward did you have to move the radiator support?
4) what about firewall clearance?
5) any pics of your motor mounts would be appriciated, it would be nice to have something to model after (instead of re-inventing the wheel...)
6) i hear that the 700r4 is a great tranny w/ modification, what are these mods? ( i'll admit, i haven't searched for this one yet)
I'm sure there are a lot of other things that are slipping my mind at the moment, i'll add them as i think of them. I also would appreciate anything you learned from past motor swaps into scout 80/800's, or anything to look for w/ the tbi 350, (since i still have to pull it out of the suburban it is in)
Thanks,
Vinny
Ben W 10-13-2003, 05:26 PM I haven't done a 350 but I have done a IH 304 and a Cad 472. So heres my ideas.
1) If you had the radiator out of the rig the motor came out of I would say make that fit, but since you don't, I would pick up a universal aluminum radiator from summit. A 27X19 or whatever should work nicely. You are going to have to fab mounts no matter what.
2) I've used a Scout II shifter with a 727 and now I have a TCI Streetfighter shifter with a TH400. They both suck. If don't mind spending money, get an Art Carr or a Lokar. Otherwise get whatever you can afford from Summit. Don't get a ratchet shifter, stick with a gate type.
3) Completely cut out the front crossmember and the core support. Its in the way for everything. A HD Front bumber/winch mount solidly welded to the frame will substitute well for the front crossmember.
4) Shouldn't be a problem with the 350. I had to open it up for both the 304 and the 472. If you put your motor far back and too high the distributor might hit the defroster ducting. Keep it low and you should be fine.
5) just fab something up. Search the Landcruiser and Jeep forums for some good pics of 350 motor mounts. The concept is the same no matter what vehicle they are going in.
6) don't know
You are probably going to have to modify the steering column, and you will want to do power steering at the same time.

heres the motor mounts I built, 1/4" plate to the block with 2" square stock

MochaMike 10-14-2003, 12:48 AM What they said....
Specifically, cut the front crossmember out & move the motor as far forward as possible.
Mine came with the 350 in, with the crossmember still in, & it's Snug as a Bug in a Rug.... Like really Snug... I will definitely have probs if I try & pull the Dizzy...
I've got Rams Head headers, & they only clear by about 1/2".
I've got a radiator out of an early vet, which I'm not sure if I'll keep do to some hose issues..

Scout Dude 10-14-2003, 01:06 AM Well, I put a SBC in my 64 back in 94 or 95 I think...I've attached a pic. I moved the firewall over about 2" (Made an entire new center firewall portion) and had a custom 5 core, triple pass radiator made to fit the stock brackets, but flipped to the other side. I notched the stock crossmember and ran it like this for a while...Then I finally got tired of the lack of room and removed the crossmemver (which i should have done in the first place)
I still prefer the engine sitting that far back, and I like the look of a centered firewall vs a stock one with the motor sitting in front of it.
61scout80 10-14-2003, 10:12 AM I can use the radiator, since i now have 2 suburbans to part out, so i will be doing that, and i may also create a new rad support w/ room for oil and tranny coolers.
i will try to keep updates and maybe even a how to, i start ripping the 350 out tonight, and prolly the trans and case tomorrow night.
thanks again for the replys, and if anyone else has something to add please do.

on the motor mounts. I had some advance adapters which are very similar to Harkinofs. I would not go that route again. they did nothing for vibration and IMHO allowed the truck to twist too much when you mash the go pedal. i used to be able to sit in neutral and rock the truck side to side with the gas pedal.
here is what I built the second time around. stock SBC motor mounts with the brackets fabricated. They mount to the frame on the inside and wrap across the bottom to the other side. this should spread the force best and allow for a low installation keeping the driveline angles in check.
I have a 700r4 that has been "updated". I don't know what that means but the 2nd guy to rebuild it knew just what the first guy did. That "doing" did however include putting a V6 pump in and F..ing me in the process. The pump only lasted 5 years. It has been 5 more now and my 700 is trouble free.
You will prolly have a prob with fan clearance. you should go to electric. Don't buy an aftermarket fan as I am convinced that they all suck. I used a dual fan shrouded unit from an 87 nissan stanza and usually ony run one fan and even then I have only gotten off of 160 when running high Rs in the sand dunes.
lemmie know if you need more info. I have done this once, poorly and again ,well executed I must say.
here is a shabby pic of the mounts
