make sure you get the most recent edition... the question pool was changed recently and the old books will not reflect that.

I saw the practice stuff and did a few questions on one of the sites but I didnt find any information on what the process was for getting a lic./or what kind of lic. are out there. the FCC site really blows, yea they tell you all the forms for getting a lic. but what license should I strive to get? I'd like to get something that would cover HAM and GMRS.. something that covers a few of them that I might use. like i mentioned earlier... I'm new at this stuff.. thanks for the stuff so far.. keep'em coming

I don't think I like the fact that it has my address and personal info listed when I do a call sign search. Although, it's my parents address since the info they have is ~15 years old. I still don't like it.

exam is put on by a local volunteer club

you pay them like $25 to take the test

you pass, they handle everything else
you fail, you go home to practice more

it's that simple.

hit the QRZ website and do the no-code tech sample test enough times and you WILL pass.

That test uses the actual questions that may show up on the test given to you on exam day.

On QRZ you can also find when/where the local test will be held.

Lemme know if you need more specifics. I'm about 80% done with an article I'm drawing up on this for Pirate4x4.com

Try a local Radio Shack. Many of them around here have paperback books that
have all the info you need, including sample test. They cost about $20.

You can also try some of these stores.

you can make it so that your address isn't shown.

goat- the proccess for taking a test to receive a license is first you have to have the knowledge so stuy up. your license will be easy to get now that all the stuff has changed. your first tests (2) will be for no-code technician. this is a technicians license with no morse-code requrements. this will allow you to operate vhf/uhf, which in my opinion is what you are going to want to run for a trail rig (2meters/70cm). you will have to look somewhere, maybe online or in the local newspaper or local happenings magazine to see when tests are held. there are usually tests held monthly or there abouts and you just go down, pay a fee, and take the test. it also pays greatly for you to hang aruond with some older operators and learn the proper radio etiquit (sp?) most newer peopel on the radio these days without this knowledge are the ones using it like a friggin cb radio, and they jsut trash talk all day. anyways, hope this helps.

Damn the man! Always trying to keep a cracka down!:D

Just thought it was odd to display my address, got my tech plus ~15 years ago, will probably get my general or more in the near future. I wish I would have known back then that it would be so handy now for the trails. I just did it, cause my dad made me.:D
