: Another question about air compressors

Could a guy use a 110v power supply, (like the NAPA part in the tech section under on-board welder), to run a small 110v compressor? I want to install a welder but need air also, but space is limited. Anyone running a setup like this? I would think a person could find a compressor that would work within the voltage and amp ratings of this converted, but would it have enough air volume to reseat a tire with a decent sized tank? Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks,
-Jeremy

The answer is a qualified YES, as long as the motor is a brush type (and not an induction motor) and will run on DC current and as long as your compressor does not draw more current than your alternator can supply. A 100A alternator is going to max out at about 10-12A at 110V. You do not need the NAPA box unless you want to run 1 alternator to both charge your battery and to put out regulated 110V DC. You can just skip the box and regulate the voltage (and therefore the speed of your electric motor) by regulating the engine speed.

SO your going to carry a full compressor on the trail?

I would look into rigging dual alternators and a york on your motor, It can be done. I have seen this setup on a CJ..

It sure can be done... I have this setup in my Willys and it works well (and the second alternator is really nice to have when the primary alternator decides to crap out).

I already have the tanks on my jeep, just thinking about carrying a small 110v compressor that could be portable. I planned on using a york, but this idea popped into my head, so I thought I'd see if anyone had success with this type of set-up. Thanks for the info, I like the performance of the york, and for the price its hard to beat, I'll probably go that route:)
