Civil War reenactors club here have some very nice 8" coehorns, 12# Mexican cannon, mountain howitzers, etc. A few years ago some of us coerced them into a live-fire demonstration at the Socorro range, for an annual meeting of the state shooting sports assn. There was a small company of cardboard bad-guys set up as targets, and various types of projectiles for the different artillery including grape shot, chain shot, etc. Seeing the effects firsthand gives a different perspective than you get from textbooks or documentaries. The coehorns make an enormous, very sharp crack unlike anything else - literally sounds like a close lightning strike.

I used to shoot trap with a fellow who had a civil war reconstruction mortar/cannon-he made his own black powder (in the oven:eek: ) as well. One evening, he and a bunch of us were sitting around at the conservation club discussing his cannon (lots of beer was consumed). He was whining that the bore would only accept tall and skinny beer cans like Strohs and Coors but that they would shred themselves when he shot the cannon. My dad foolishly suggested he fill the cans with concrete.

Shortly thereafter, he shot a concrete-filled beer can about a quarter to half-mile whereupon, it entered a home at head height and destroyed a television and wall.

He left town shortly thereafter.

Oh yeah, he was a BIG fan of heavy caliber handguns. He had a couple of 45-70s, including a revolver and a Casull.

Let's be careful and not repeat this gentleman's actions!

Missed it this year, but every year for about the past 5, have gotten to witness the ever bigger and badder cantalope gun my buddies make. The 2002 model was made from a 10' section of PVC pipe 6" in dia. It had a steel "breech" and was powered by Oxyacetalyne. Sucker shot cantalopes about 1/4 mile into the woods.

I'm sure the bears were happy.
