I keep seeing rebuilt Century Gasless Wire Feed battery powered welders for around $225. Here's one - http://www.sportsmansguide.com/showad.html?promo_code=WX1&item_id=52711&dc_id=48
Are these any good? How's the weld quality for gasless? I don't have a garage, so this seems like it would be great for building nerfs and bumpers and cage and SAS. Any thoughts? Maybe if the weld quality was poor, I could use it to tack stuff together while I design and build it, then take it somewhere to have it welded nicely?

My first was a century and it was POOP. I returned it, bought a lincoln and haven't looked back.
edit: now that I followed thew link... I have heard those are pretty good for a rechargeable.
Considering your situation, I say go for it. It says it is rated up to 1/4", so if that is all you wil be welding, this would make a great portable welder :)

Says 'Reconditioned' to perform like new. I'd be a little concerned about that but that's a good price all the same... :)

I have heard really good things about these welders but no first hand experience. I've got a new Mobi-Arc and Readywelder :D

I am serious - you don't have a garage, so buying a big welder setup is just not for you. This sounds like the perfect compromise, and when you do get a garage, you can get a big welder and this one can be dedicated to trail use - perfect! :D

What about the flux core that this uses? Will that produce an ok weld?
Would I be better off with 2 deep cycle batteries and some jumper cables? I know how to stick weld.
i bought that welder from about a year and a half ago. it is a good welder for small projects and actually welds pretty well. i carry it on the trail with me just in case and use it mostly just for tack welding. i am happy with it it is worth the money, its not a lincoln you can weld with all day long, but for small projects its great.
