: Broken Pinion... :(
GloNDark 10-08-2001, 08:03 AM Hit Fordyce on Saturday for some playing around and ended up breaking my rear pinion. DAMN 10 SPLINES!
So here is my dilema do I:
A: take the set of Waggoneer axles that I have and throw them under the cruiser? Dana 44 front and rear with 4.11 Gears. Whats the width difference between stock cruiser axles and the waggoneer 44's??
B: Go on the hunt for FJ-60 axles, and drop those under the cruiser? What's the width difference here? How about parts? More availible than the FJ-40 axles??

Being that winter is almost here I have some time to get the cruiser going before the snow runs begin and I really don't want to waste time and $$$ putting crappy parts back into it.
Thanks in advance!!

Jason M 10-08-2001, 08:08 AM There is a set of fine spline ring and pinion in the for sale section. The fine spline is MUCH stronger than the 10 spline pinion. Do that and get a track bar.
60 axles are a bit wider (a couple of inches) and can be hard to find.
The waggy 44 rear is IMHO a weaker unit than the cruiser rear end if the cruiser axle has a fine splined pinion.
Hope this helps!
wngrog 10-08-2001, 08:52 AM FJ-60 axles give you a LITTLE more width, but if you smap an inner axle (long side) the spares can be a BITCh to find.
Happened this weekend to a guy I was wheeling with.
I say go with the 44's F and R.
44 Ujoints and shafts are stronger than Birfields and MUCH cleaner to change on the trail!
JasonH 10-08-2001, 01:57 PM Minor detail here, but the FJ60 axles will have 3.70's in them. If you can find FJ62 axles, they'll have the 4.10's.
Just another point to consider.
gunracer1 10-08-2001, 02:45 PM hey i have some fine spline 4.11s out of a 62 you can have for 40 bucks a set. plus shipping. they are in great shape, i went to 5.29s. just e mail me or respond here. later mike
GloNDark 10-08-2001, 02:57 PM Will those work in the stock FJ-40 third members??
fj40charles 10-09-2001, 05:14 AM The ring/pinion gears will work. The third members from FJ60/62 will install in FJ40s without any mods.
40_Bones 10-09-2001, 09:16 AM Whichever setup you decide on, if you are SOA
you definately need a track bar.

HEARD THAT!!! New gears in the works and Traction bars front and rear next step!
Tankota 10-09-2001, 12:26 PM The wagoneer front end will have a width of 61" WTW (my cruiser frontend w/ pickup disc brakes is 56.5" WTW)
Also the wagoneer spring perch centers will be 32" apart whereas the cruiser's are 27" apart.
Due to this you will either have to outboard your front spring mounts;
or shorten the long side of the wagoneer frontend 5".
Shortening the wagoneer frontend would result in a 56" wide front dana 44 (1/2" narrower than my current cruiser frontend )
By the way, is your wagoneer rearend offset?
You could probably get away with running a centered rearend with an offset style cruiser transfer case for a while (I think jeff(aka dogwalker) did this for a little while).
cruiser COARSE pinion = 1.098" 10 spline
cruiser FINE pinion = 1.107" 27 spline
Dana 44 pinion = 1.144" 26 spline
These measurements are taken at the outer edges of the splines (the real diameter should be taken at the inside of the splines).
Also, a dana 44 rear in a cruiser isn't (in my opinion) any substantial improvement in strength.
Yes, the Dana 44 is a bit stronger in the pinion area than a 10 spline cruiser pinion but it has the same size and spline of axle shafts, the brakes are smaller, and the ring gear is smaller. I would go with a dana 60 (I am currently building one)
PS I've personally seen 2 dana 44 pinions brake and 1 cruiser pinion it sucks to fix either of them on the trail.

GloNDark 10-09-2001, 01:14 PM Well thanks to gunracer1 down in Texas. Looks like I will be getting some fine spile gears and running those front and rear. And taking the remaining course spline third member (Front) and using it as a spare. Cheap fix for now, and next on the list is a hybrid front end! I like the width of the cruiser...just wanna get rid of the birfields and crappy pinions. Half way there now!
gunracer1 10-09-2001, 03:29 PM hey glondark check your e mail. the gears are on the way. later mike
Erik D_lux 10-11-2001, 08:04 AM Hopefully the driveshaft will still work when you get those new gears.

If I had the other flanges, why wouldn't it??

Yeah as far as I know they made the two pinions which were fine and course. The flange fits on the pinion and they were also a differnt bolt pattern going to the driveshaft. I dont know if you can just simply redrill holes in the new flanges to fit. I believe you will need new yokes for both flanges on the driveshaft. Good luck!

Dude, I fully drink to that!!!!
