: dogs chewing on a 2x4
surveyboy 10-18-2003, 04:19 PM Well I'm sure like most of you, my back yard is a mess full of strange and wonderful things.
my dog has taken up chewing on a couple of 2x4's that were laying around. is there any harm in letting him chew on it?

White lumber isn't so bad, just be aware of splinters and nails/staples embedded in the wood.
Pressure-treated lumber contains many harmful chemicals (including arsenic), so keep it away from the pets. Even skin contact with wet PT lumber is bad.

.....The splinter thing is worse on soft woods, like pine and Fir...but hardwoods like oak or maple aren't so bad... :D
Treated is the WORST...for children too...and a lot of decks and Play Yard Swings are made of it...
Tim got a sliver in the back of his hand, building a deck. It was fine while it was in there ...but when he got home and pulled it out...His whole hand swelled up! Like REALLY puffed up BAD! Stayed that way for 3 days.

Roxywheels 10-18-2003, 05:35 PM Varga's been known to snack on some wood from time to time :D :roxy:
I don't let her eat it now. I'm afraid she'll get splinters in her mouth or her pooper
fj40crusher 10-18-2003, 06:34 PM Actually, that wood can kill him if he eats enough of it. It will block up his intestines. My friend lost a Chow Chow this way. He was chewing on her deck.
Probably harmless if he is just chewing. My dog chews on my deck:mad: , but he doesn't eat it.
Toy 4Runner Man 10-18-2003, 10:31 PM Damm, my Rott has chewed on anything from wood to Oakley's, and never had any problems! She has actually eaten bones w/o chewing them up, got into the bag of chocolate, cat crap, bird food, fabric, string( the funniest), ect.
oh, and there was all the power cords!!!!
crackalackin 10-18-2003, 10:41 PM Yea my dog ate some pettttty messed up crap when we had him. He as cat shat, string, rubber bands (ever had to pull a rubber band out of u dogs arse?), chocolate, ice cream, etc..
Kyron 10-18-2003, 11:00 PM I had a pit that chewed on things untill her teeth were gone and she still tried to chew on 4X4's....... you could tell cause the wood would be bloody. Had to put her down because of her teeth (or lack of) she was only 5yrs old also.
350CJ5 10-19-2003, 06:40 PM is NOT a food group - don't let your pet eat lumber.
NOTPRETTY 10-19-2003, 08:24 PM Give him something plastic. It will save a tree.
NOTPRETTY 10-19-2003, 08:29 PM One more thing...Most dogs live in fenced yards...Most fences have 2x4's used in their construction...Good luck :D
