: Snow Tire decision

So I've read all the "best snow tire" posts and still can't decide. Right now I'm running 36x12.5 SX's on my CJ and they are really good at digging large holes which I have to dig myself out of. SO i'm thinking about getting a set of 38x15.50 parnelli jones dirt grip or TSL radials for strickly a dedicated off-road snow tire. Any thoughs on these tires or other radials would be much appreciated.

I have seen BFG mud tires do amazing things in the snow. Last year after sticking my Bronco with TSL's in a ditch my buddy drives down the same hill, helps me put my chains on and then backs up it to really piss me off. Great snow traction.

That would be my snow tire of choice... But unfortunately they do not make a 38x15.5

I've had great luck with the 36" SX's on my EB in the snow. I run them at about 3 psi and use the loud peddle liberally. I get stuck but, hey, that's half the fun:)

My daughter runs 33" SSR's on her Toy and they also work well. They work better than the SX's on ice due to the siping.

In general, my experience is run the largest tire you can fit (and turn), let the air out and Get It awn :skull:

The good year mtr's work great for me in all types but I am also looking for just snow tires in the range of38"-40"x14.5+.
My 35x12.5 worked great @ 3-4psi untill you stuff it !

Look at the dick cepeck fun country tires. My brother n law owns a set of these and they kick a$$ in the snow. They do tend to be a little expensive but I think they are worth the bucks. If you want a tire for strictly snow then I think you should steer clear of the swampers they tend to want to digg too much in the powder.

Just my $.02:usa:

I've also heard good things about the gumbo mudder radial and they make a 38x15.50. They are a little less aggresive than swamper, so they shouldn't dig as much..... Maybe I should just get a set of each. I'll just have to see about mortaging the house.

The Dick Cepeks run in 36x16.5 or 38x15.5. Which one would be best for a CJ-5?

I'm all for the radial swampers. They are super soft, and air down great! Gumbo mudder radials are a great tire in the snow too. I think they are a bit expensive though.

Whatever you get, make sure you sipe them.

I use to run 40" gumbos and they sucked balls in the snow! I
was running them with beadlocks and traction was lame! They
worked OK in powder but anything else sucked. BFG's were
kickin my butt all day. I am running 39.5 boggs that have been
grooved and siped and they work killer! You just have to go down to 2 psi or lower to get they to float.

big wide used bald radials, doesn't matter if they are cepek interco or denman

Rockhog... the gumbo mudders tread design is different for 40's. I've been told that only the 38's or smaller are good for snow tires and that the 40's really suck in snow.

38.5" ground hawg radials. Air them down and you are good to go. On the expensive side but worth it in the snow. Plus you can drive them on the street and they ride great. If its snow, get a radial and not a bias ply.

I would have to say Fun country too, they just WORK!! The new kevlar version is killer too, though a lot of money.

I have heard that the Dirt Grips do well too. They have the tallest radial I think too, unless you go military tires. I am thinking that I am going to give these a try next. I want a tire that can do everything well, though I wheel a lot of snow and have to drive on the pavement too.

Just for snow.....38" fun country, the entire tread face run on the siping machine, on a 15x10 or 12" rim with the inner and outer beads screwed on. And maybe even studded if you have the time.....
