: Yes, Another Stupid Hummer Rim Thread!

Maybe I will be able to get all of my questions answered this time. I have several ?s regarding the Hummer rims, and yes I have done searches to look for the answers.

1. What are the major differences between the bolt Hummer rim and the 12 bolt Hummer rim? I hear that the 8 bolt was used for the bias-ply and the 12 bolt was used for the radials. In other words are you able to run the hummer bias-plies on the 12 bolt and the radials on the 8 bolt?

2. How hard is it to re-center them? Does the fact that they are a 2-piece tire interfere at all with the re-centering process?

3. Why is it that the 12 bolt style is typically more?

4. Is it necessary to seal the 2 halfs with an o-ring or can you use silicone?

5. What is the best style of beadlock?

6. How much would a set of 12 bolt rims with runflats cost? How much would a set of 8 bolt rims with runflats cost?

7. How much do you hate me for posting another Hummer rim thread? (1-10)

Thanks for any info,
Nate

1 The 8 bolt and 12 bolt are only different by the number of studs that hold the outer rin inplace. Ohter than that, there is no other difference. The 8 bolts are the most popular, and work just fine for most any 4x4. I have not heard of any problems with running the 8 bolt rims.

2 DIY recentering has been covered before. It does not look very hard. You can also have it done by one of the boards vendors for not much money.

3 Because the 12 bolts are harder to find?

4 O-rings do not cost that much, just do it right the first time. I don't know for sure, I have never tried myself, but it seems like a lot of area to cover by silicone. Damned silicone won't even hold in oil with a diff cover, how is it going to hold in air pressure?

5 What do you mean? The rubber style or magnesium style? I don't know.

6 I have seen the 8 bolts for as little as $25 each. Typical pricing is about $50 each.

One other difference between a 8 and a 12 bolt rim is the thickness of the outer ring. The 8 bolt is thinner and will bend easier. (ask me how I know) Some of the vendors on the board are working on some solutions to the lip bending problem.
Not to be a smart ass, but I really think (know) that all of your questions would have been answered by searching. ;)

Thanks for the info guys. That 4x4help page was exactly like usa6x6, one of them got ripped off . It would be great to get some more opinions though, so...

How hard is it to re-center them? Does the fact that they are a 2-piece tire interfere at all with the re-centering process?

What is the best style of beadlock? PVC, Stock Rubber, Stock Magnesium, or other (I saw this other kind that appeared to be plastic or something, anyone know anything about that kind?I heard that was the best.)

How much would a set of 12 bolt rims with runflats cost? How much would a set of 8 bolt rims with runflats cost?

If these 3 could be addressed some more, I would appreciate it.

Thanks again,
Nate

I just recented my rims. I would NOT do it again. Its such a good price most of the guys have to do it for you. I had a hard time getting my true. I dont really have vibrations but still took me a long time to cut the center, countersink the holes and get it true. Not worth it.

As far as the beadlock themselves I run the PVC. I like them. They are light, you dont have to cut them like the mags, and as far as I understand the rubber ones are not so common.

8 bolt rims with runflats could cost you in the area of $100 for each setup so right around $400 for 4. Not sure on the 12 bolt.

Good luck

P.S. I have some stock 8 bolt for sale. I am going to be putting them on here as soon as I get around to it.

Nate

Since I maintain both FAQs and have recently updated the one on my site no one ripped anyone off.

There are some differences between the 8 and 12 bolt wheels so much so that they are hardly allike. The 8 bolt wheel has the wheel flange as part of the main part of the wheel so only the beadlock part comes off. On a 12 bolt wheel the wheel flange is part of the beadlock part of the wheel so the weight of the rig in on the 12 bolts so that is why there are 12 to help hold the load. Once you recenter the wheel the weight will be back on the main part of the wheel and the 12 bolts will just be for the beadlock.
Yes the 12 bolt wheels have a thicker beadlock and they use the same o-ring as the 8 bolt ones. No I wouldn't use silicone to seal them. The o-rings are about $4ea.
The 12 bolt wheels are the ones that came with the rubber runflats and are much harderd to find but there are no problems in running bias or radial on either one.

I bought five rims (8-bolt) from 66CJDean here on this board. Custom 6-lug centers with a sweet slotted design. Yes, I've seen how bad the rim lip gets chewed and plan on som 1/2" bar to be seam welded around the edge. They came with finished blu pvc centers and new mounting hardware. The rims were primered and I gotta say they rock. The only weak link was the cardboard boxes they wheels came in. Poor things didn't last the journety to me!

I very much like the product and would refer him to friends; he does great work. Out of respect to his pricing, I will let him chat costs with you. I would caution that you truly get what you pay for, and that being said, I am very happy with my investment

[edit] he just posted, d'oh!

recentering is not hard, did it myself with an acetylene torch and a stick welder, and worked great.

they put a new button on the board looks like this... [search]
