Has anyone cut their stock TJ gas tank skid, so to allow the gas tank to be raised up higher? I'm going to do it right now, just wondering if anyone has done this or has any websites of someone who has.

Mod'ing the stock skid/mount is like mod'ing a d35c, don't bother. Get yourself a Tomken skid and mod it to go higher as well as to serve as the mount.

Or if you're more money-expenditure inclined, get the Kilby skid that is already set up to be used without the factory mount and is raised as is.

Why modify something that hardly even qualifies as a skid??? That factory plate isn't even 1/8" thick. I'd be more inclined to call it a "stone guard"

HAHAHAHA Better of dead ;) btw I agree.. the stock thing is flimsy at best.

I did it before I got a free Tomken skid. I say it is worth it if you don't want to spend the money and you have the time and welder to do it. I assume that you have a body lift because if not I WOULD say that there's no point. I have a 1 inch body lift. So it went up a little more than a inch. I say that the Kilby is really nice but it's $ and I don't like him:mad: I modified the Tomken and like it ok. It hits the diff even after being "clearanced" with a sledge.:( Good luck

I completely agree that the stock skid isn't a skid! I've got some extra time to mess around with. I thought it'd be fun to cut the skid plate up and see how high I could raise it.
I'm either going to get a Kilby or build my own. I was just seeing if anyone had done it yet.

a friend of mine took his stock skid off straightened the mounting lip on the back side, put it back in raisedit up 2" on the back side only and attached it to the body... im sure there are people that will flame this but he has been running it for 3 years now without problem (97 TJ D44's F&R 36"TSL's & Exo Cage He beats it up)

Let me guess ... you have the factory 44?

I had to do the same clearancing for mine. Instead of the "sledge method," I cut a section out of the leading face of the skid.

... just another option ...

No not a 44 but a high pinion 9inch. Yeah I would have cut it but was lazy at the time and did not think it needed that much. It did!

Well, I finished raising the gas tank. Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I have a 2" BL. I cut 2 3/4" off of the three connecting pieces. The cut the bent portion with the holes for the bolts off. Then welded the three bended parts of the connecting pieces to their original spots. I had to cut some of the cross member to fit the tank up inside. I also had to move the tank itself over towards the driver's side about 1 1/2". I took the straps that hold the tank to the "skid" off. I also cut the passengers side of the skid so that it wouldn't hit the exhaust pipe mount. Not to hard of a mod session there. I now have the right info and sizes I need to make my own skid plate. I'll try and post some pics of it in a few hours.

I was bored one afternoon last year and came up with this

The skid on the bumper is a seperate unit.
We are getting ready to go leafs out back in conjuction with raising the tank up by cutting the frame crossmember out.
Hope it helps.

Yep, I did this a couple years ago to my '98. Just cut the skid front and back, overlapped 1-1/2" or so and welded it together. The tank now sits as high as it can w/o messing with the crossmember above the rear wheels.

I also made a new skid plate for it that fits over the raised stock one. Got pictures somewhere.....
