A small movement to get rockcrawling and 4-wheeling in general legit on Oahu in Hawaii is under way. Yes there's hardly anyplace to go on this Island but the Big Island's lava fields will spank the living crap out of you California boys. (OK, us too)

Checkout the guy in the back ground that's pretty hard core :flipoff2:

But I am glad to see you guys trying to effectively and legally start 4-Wheeling / Rock Crawling on the island. Congrats guys.

i would think that if you could get access to some of the lava fields that are there you would have some great wheeling. it would be some of the most brutal tire shredding terrain around.

i have been talking with the wife about going on vacation and hawaii is on the list. i would love to go wheeling with you guys.

Good luck on getting some decent wheeling areas. When I lived there, 'bout the only place to wheel on Oahu was around Kaena Point and a few spots between LuaLualei and Schofield along Kolekole Road. DNR or whatever it's called there closed Kaena and the @#$%^& Army closed the few trails up the Kolekole.

I did take my junk over to the big island to wheel in the lava beds around Kailua-Kona once . . . Big mistake! It rained the whole week I was there and the wet lava literally shredded a brand new set of tires. My bad!

Can you guys ferry your rigs between the islands ?
If so, how much does it cost, and does it run on a
regular basis ?

Back in the olden days there was a guy that ran an old LCT out of Southeast Loch Pearl to Kailua-Kona. As I remember, he charged around $200 for my EB and took 3 days to make the trip . . . One way. Don't know how they do it now.

Things got even worse on Oahu post 911. They closed down all access to Peacock Flats, Helemano, and East Schofield. I don't know if they have reopened them, been back on the mainland for a while now.

You can ship vehicles between the islands on a barge. Takes like 5 days.

I can not comment on comparing the Big Island to the Rubicon but I have seen some places up at Pohakuloa that would destory a vehicle.

Theres a small group of guys, The "Big Island Rockcrawlers" I think. Under a dozen guys with buggys and yotas and jeeps. I talk to one of them, the lava will eat a brand new set of tires in just a month. Make Las Cruces seem like slickrock. A 300+ acre off road park with rockcrawling trails is being built right now in Kona right by the Keahole airport. If anybody knows this area it is unbelievable. A 200 year old pahoehoe flow ran into the ocean and the terrain above and under water is just insane!

I'd like to see an ARCA event there one day. Give you rock junkies an excuse to come.

This is a link to the map of the park under development. The Off Road park does not include trails that already exist in the area or any obstacle courses that could be created just about anywhere for a real event.

Hard to believe that they don't have ferries capable of
taking passenger AND THEIR VEHICLE, like they do
in the Seattle-Vancouver area.

Is it because the straits between the Islands are too
rough for that type of ship ?
There would be a big demand for that type of service,
expecially for tourists, who would be able to take their
rental car to adjacent islands without having to rent
another vehicle.

Hey, Schofield resident here, be sure and let me know when that place is legal. And if you need any signatures on any petitions or anything, just ask. I'd like to see how far my puny 31's will go there. Looks for fun than Kaena.

I got to do a bunch of legal wheeling in Hawaii due to the US Army:D .

Hillclimbing on Oahu, in mud was always a blast.

Ran around the lava fields up by PTA, Mauna Kea for you civilian types. And camo, yes the lava rocks chew tires up like it's nothing.:D But of course the big fun was rolling over the lava and hitting the thin pockets and having it crumble and dropping a tire about a foot into a hole:D

yeah that terrain would spank us :D

is the lava flows hard on all tyres, including the swampers?? or just radials?

hisege

Yup, the lava definitely chews tires - doesn't matter bias or radial. Fished a lot on the new flow at Kalapana before they made it accessible to tourists. Driving on "virgin" lava is pretty cool - the top layers crackle and come apart in shards and they're sharp like glass, hence the eaten lugs. Looking back, most of you hardcore guys would've had a blast - LOTS of terrain variety and tons of traction...

I'm the founder of Big Island RockCrawlers.

White Toy:
The barges between the Islands only run at night, The wind in the channels between the Islands can get to 60mph in the day and O at night. They have tried ferry services before and lost millions. It was hydrofoil type ferry and made the trip from Kona to Oahu in just 3 hours, compared to 8hrs on the barges.

Islandzuki:
When I ship my rig to other Islands, it's with the trailer and tow rig, so the price is much more then a rig that can be driven onto the barge. A Jeep(without trailer & tow rig) can be sent from Kona to Oahu for 150 bucks(oneway). If it's sent back within 30 days, the return price is 1/3 of that.

The new park in Kona: I've been nominated to be on the Board of Directors as the head of the Rock Crawling area of the park, including the design and layout of the trials :D . At this point I'm running unopposed with membership voting in 3 weeks. There are about 3000 members at this point.

The flows on the Big Island can be as easy of as hard as what you want to try,,,,,,it's difficult to compare to mainland terrain, these are relatively new lava flows. The surface rock is very sharp, there are no real rockcrawling trails, There are "two tracks" that take you to the edges of the flows. When you get out on the flow and you can go in any direction, your surrounded by obsticals. You just pick and choose which ones to try.

These TSL's have about 20 hours in the flow.
