As the subject lines says, my 2 yr. project is starting to wrap up. I just need to wrap up some of the little stuff like putting the airbox back under the dash, clean up/paint/install the doors, hook up OBA, etc. etc. etc. I scored a sweet cutting torch setup this weekend with tanks, regulators, 30' hoses, dolly and a Victor ST1600C cutting torch and a Victor welding torch.... all for $170. Filled the bottles on the way home and immediatly put it to use cutting out a pair of patch panels for the quarter panels. I cut them out of the 14 gauge diamond plate I had left over from the cargo floor project. Man that stuff is stiff, but I finally persueded them to conform to the quarter panels curvature. :D

Torc, you've got a lot of time in on the Scout. Are you going to cry when you wipe out a quarter panel :flipoff2:

Nice work. What gyrations did it take to "conform" the plate stock?

You do realise that once yer done you'll have to get another "project", either that or accept that a projects never truely finished, just temporarily driveable... :D

Oh, I'll probably be a little bummed, but that's the name of the game. Truth be known, the quarters aren't all that straight after I strecthed the wheel opening 3". I have some more to learn about butt welding sheetmetal before the body shops are gonna be lining up to hire me.:flipoff2: The purpose of all of the body work so far has just been to replace air with sheetmetal. It just so happens that when you buy sheetmetal, it comes in straight sheets.. :D I know it's gonna take some hits, but after all that's what I'm building it for. You'd be amazed what flat paint will hide.

A piece of pipe in my vise, a c-clamp and a 3 lb BFH. :flipoff2: I might get another project after a while, but in the mean time I will have some time to go DRIVE this one instead of wrench on it all the time.

Just fer grins though ye might try heating o a dull cherry red before whanging on it. It anneals it just enough to make it easier to work. The extra cold work required to shape after brings it back to hard...

I thought about that, but I was skeerd :flipoff2: I tried cutting that plate with a torch back when I was doing the cargo floor. I was using my friends setup and he has a little cutting tip. By the time I could get the plate hot enough to cut, it looked like a lasagna noodle.:eek: I gave it another try with my newly aquired mongo-monster tip and as soon as I put the flame to it, it was bright red and ready to cut. I was able to cut it so fast that I got no warpage at all!! I was afraid that if I started to heat it to anneal it, that'd I end up with another lasagna noodle.

It just wouldn't be a Scout if it wasn't multi-colored :flipoff2: so that's the plan. At this point I'm thinkin' it'll end up 4 to 5 different colors. I'm just going to paint the whole thing one color as a base coat and get the damn thing on the road. Then at a later date, I'll add the other colors. Here's a shot of the front clip sportin' it's new base color paint.

Just fer grins, take a piece of scrap and heat it until it turns into a potato chip. Then continue until its flat (and it will go flat with good torch control). Its a function of how uniform the heat is through to part. Just takes an experienced eye and a bit of testing to find how much heat is required for the material to normalise-completly stress relieve using a "manual" method is all. You find out about this in sheet metal 102... :D

Either way, I like the way it turned out in the pics. Theres a goodly bit of craftmanship involved there.

Looks good TORC. I like the diamond plate idea, I have quite a bit of cancer in that area as well, but was just gonna go with flat plate. The Scout could use some bling though....:cool2:

Nope! it stays right where it's at... next to the other two red gas containers. The torching does, however, take place outside.;) With all the flamable shit in my garage, it's easier to wheel the flame outside than it is to move all the flamable stuff outside. Thanks for pointin' out the safety aspects, though, so the kids won't try this at home. :beer:

hopefully some day i'll get far enough into my project to start replacing sheetmetal :rolleyes:

but for now the first order of "custom body work" will be insatalling sections of vents(louvres for the hood) preformed in sheet from teh side sections of a motor control panel i scrounged out of the "boneyard" at the steel mill

Well, it was supposed to be "Sand" but at the time I was picking it up, my local supplier was out and it was going to take him about 3 weeks to resupply. I couldn't wait that long so I went in search of an alternative. I found another color that is very close to the "sand" that I was looking for but it's a little bit lighter. The color you see there is called "Marsh Grass" and it's a completely flat color. I bought it in a gallon can but I think rattle cans may also be available.

When I was getting things tied up Hark came over to look at it I had cut the front fenders to where I thought the 37inchers would clear he kind of smiled wiith a look that said "bullshit" Sure enough I rub at stuff, I am cut to almost the exact same spot you are..I have 1.5" to the bump stop so I am cutting again at least to the same hieght as the side marker lights....just something to think about ;)

Are you RS up front. My front will travel rearward and upward when stuffed. We'll see.... the test will be flexing it up when/if I ever get this thing "done".:flipoff2:
