I'm posting this for a friend...
He rebuilt his factory carb, and I'm sure he put something back together wrong. When he starts it, it will rev to the moon and then die. Any ideas what he did wrong? Its a '72 FJ40 with the factory engine and carb.
Thanks in advance!

I would think stuck throttle as well, but the throttle (on the carb, not just the gas pedal) is at the idle position. I'm thinking my friend somehow messed up in his rebuild, and now it is dumping gas into the engine uncontrollably until it floods? I know nothing about cruisers, and my friend is completely stumped. I'm just trying to help him out here. Any idea what he could have done wrong?

Sounds like he has more than 1 problem. The revving problem is probably from assembling the linkage and/or high idle cams on the carb improperly. A lot of the parts can go on more than 1 way and only 1 is correct. The stalling sounds like it is starving for fuel. What it the fuel level in the bowl window whan it stops? you may be able to get an idea if it was assembled properly by looking at the pictures in the factory manual or checking out the pictures in the SOR catalog:

well, I talked to my friend again... he has a diagram for the carb, says that the linkages are all assembled correctly. He is not sure if he installed the jets correctly (he thinks he might have accidentally switched them). Any other ideas?
Thanks Again!

Switching the jets isn't going to make it rev. The chrome-plated jet is the secondary. The slow jet with the larger number (eg 70) is the secondary one. Is the vacuum-operated secondary sticking open? Did he adjust the secondary lever like in the book? Is the throttle positioner stuck on? Did he adjust the TP?

well, with numerous other problems going on (ignition burning up his points, etc.), he got sick of being so frustrated with it. He's going to let a shop sort it all out. Thanks to all who offered their help!
