One is from a '76 the other is earlier, "76 has a larger
bolt pattern(2 3/4x 2 3/8 vs 2 1/2x 2 1/4) they should
be course spline and therefore interchangeable, right?

This is true, only difference is the bolt pattern.

Thanks, thats what I was hoping. Was just reading another post
which mentioned a round pinion flange on '75 and up, I was under the impression my rear axel was a '76 but it has a rectangular pinion flange:confused: what gives?

I don't think round flanges came around until 83 or 84. My '82 fj40 has rectangular flanges.
