couple detail questions for my front 60 buildup...ive been reading search returns for an hour or so, and these are the only questions i cant find an answer to...
1) im using a 79f350hp60 housing. i want to run all chevy stuff (knuckles, spindles, 35spl stubs, rotors, calipers, hubs, etc)
with the chevy hardware, is the only option (without modification) an eight lug bolt pattern? im fine with that, i just wanted to know.
2)i understand that ford calipers will clear 15in rims, with grinding, but chevys wont...what is the most backspacing i can run on a 16x8in rim, and still use high steer arms on the kingpin knuckles?
3)what is the optimum amount of caster to run for my application?
im at about 8in of lift on a xj. i generally hear 7deg, but ive also heard other ideas...
thanks fellas
~John
you can grind chevy calipers and fit 15 inch wheels

exactly how much material are we talking about removing? im willing to do a little persuading, but i ceratinly dont want to take a chance with safety.
any pics of it would be awesome.

no pic's but the d60 front calipers and brackets are very beefy. the material removed is not going to pose a problem in the safety dept. infact what you have after you grind has way more material left than the 1/2tons stuff ever thought about having. how much you grind depends on what offset wheels you run. :D

There's TONS of metal you can remove before you even get remotely close to the questional safety zone, so grind, grind, and grind some more!

thanks guys, that makes me feel alot better.
think it will be doable with a 15in rim, with 3.75in BS?
also, any opinions on the other stuff? no problems with running the chevy knuckles along with the rest of the chevy stuff on the ford kingpin housing right?
anyone know what yr chevys have 35spline?
thanks again
~John
im running 15x10 wheels with 3.5" backspacing. i had to grind but there is a ton of caliper left, cant see a prob with 3.75 thats not much more.

1) yes 8 lug is it
2) 15's will fit but save yourself alot of grinding and get less back spacing. If they fit or not is sort of up to how the wheel was made and only steel wheels will fit to my knowledge.
3)7 is fine +- 2deg.
35 spline axles came in 70 front's I am not sure they ever came in a 60 front but could be wrong.

I don't know of any 60 front's that didn't have 35 inners I was talking about outers. Some of the older Chevy's and the 78/79 ford 60 had weaker inners but they were still 35 spline.

75/76 Ford 60 has 30 spline inner axles that taper even smaller then a 44 axle.

Good to know. Thanks
I would love to see the look on the guy's face when he pulls those axles out after he was bragging about his badass 60 he has. Are they open or closed knuckle? I know the closed knuckle stuff isn't worth much in lots of ways.

steel beadlocks 3 inch backspacing and mine fits over 8 lug 92 F350 rotor's and calipers little grinding to the outside .
"when I say Little"
I put wheel on then spun it heard the rubbing the pulled the wheel and broke out the grinder and shaved a little using a sanding disc to the brake pad that came outside the caliper the metal part of the brake pad .
1 min later bolted the wheel back on and spun ! no rubbing went to the other side and did the same !

Dana 60 outer axles part # 3-82-871 (spicer) 1.5 inch 35 spline have worked well in my 60 front with 42's and heavy foot.
