: Weekend update 10/18-10/19

I'm not sure how up-to date anyone is on my project but it's still in NE and not 4-wheel-able yet.
HOWEVER after tooling on weekends (not even every weekend) for the last year, since moving to Colorado, I FINALLY have the Cadillac 472 installed AND running!!! :bounce: :bounce:
It actually fired up GREAT as soon as it got some fuel. Adjust the timing a bit, close off a vaccume port that I overlooked and it was purring like a kitten.
Actually that's not totally true. It's got a hi-lift cam and no exhaust so it was pretty freakin' loud!!
But DAMN!!! it sounded good!!
So....lets see....I've also got the transmission installed, but no shifter. Oh yeah the D20 is in there too.
So I'm pretty happy things are coming along well, I finally feel like I'm making some real progress.
Just thought I'd let you all know how things are going, and that YES I am still alive and kickin'

I tried out a couple different paints on mine this weekend. The G/F said she'd supply the paint as part of my Christmas present:flipoff2: She get's to pick the paint, but she want's a flat olive green exterior with tan interior, and I dig it. Also welded up the block where I cracked it at the oil pressure sending unit. Got it half assed sealed. Decided that my weber is probably jetted too rich, but have no idea what jets I need. Almost got stuck playing behind my house because I forgot I hadn't put the front driveshaft back in. Cut one of my spare doors with the template Dirk sent me (thanks Dirk). Shortly thereafter realized that I located the hole in the wrong place:shaking: Did some other crap...
Scout8hundred 10-21-2003, 10:33 PM I went four wheeling in Uwharrie both friday and saturday nights. It was my first time since May and it was great. I thought i made it home with no breakage until a d-shaft u-joint grenaded about 5 miles out of the forest. Oh well atleast it was an easy fix and I got to drive home in front wheel drive.:D Sure made a ricer look twice when i rolled the front tires over at a light.:eek:

IHScoutman14 10-21-2003, 11:16 PM i actually installed the SOA dana 44 into the scout in the rear. but all i got too was puttin it on with the wheels and bolting the u bolts on. good enough for me now! now all i need is a front axle...............:D wooohoooo no more wiring for me!!!!!:cool: :D
crazy4ih 10-22-2003, 12:30 AM Not really hardcore but I installed a NOS Kayline Fastrac top I got in trade for my travel top. Not a bad trade IMO.:flipoff2: Also went to the pick n pull and found a set of 4.10 gears for my brothers cherokee.
jpeater 10-22-2003, 06:30 AM Got the Scout registered, so now I am legal. I spent the rest of Saturday and Sunday fabricating a rollcage for it. One thing I got to say is that it is not easy! I figured and figured some more, used my calculator even, and I ended up with one too wide and one too narrow (at least for my liking) so I had to do them over again. I have a new profound respect for those tube buggy guys - my whole body and my brain hurts! I didn't get it all welded in though, maybe in a few weeks I'll finish it up.
I also am getting ready for the North Texas Binder's 2nd Annual Round Up in Gilmer this weekend. Put the interior back in that I took out for the rollcage follies and drove it around last night to check everything out. Danged transmission is now getting hot - WTF? I have been having troubles keeping the 392 cool now the tranny! I'll check everything tonight and see if there is flow through the cooler and external filter, might change to a high quality filter instead of the one that came with it to see if that helps some.
Ben - you're welcome. I actually was about 30 miles from Abbeville about 10 days ago coming back to Houston from Amelia on 90 - raining like a mo-fo. Enjoy the doors.

Darel 10-22-2003, 07:26 AM I got a TON of work done this weekend (through Tuesday, thank God for comp days!). Got diaphragm clutch and T19W installed, diagnosed noise related to top cover poppet springs in T19W (it's always the only part you figure is still good and doesn't need rebuilt), painted some shit, primed some body panels, pulled old rad and fan and began install on Summit aluminum rad (needs mount tabs welded on) and Taurus fan, installed oil cooler. Yeah, I was busy.

61scout80 10-22-2003, 07:52 AM pulled the 350 tbi out of the 'burban....colecting parts to get it in my scout.
not tech, but i calculated how much i have into my truck, and including the price of the truck its a whopping $800. my goal it to build this thing for less than $2000 and i'm well on my way... and the boat load of scout parts i no longer need may help me out too. anyone need some scout 80 drive line parts?!? :flipoff2:

No I have an auto, just lost the cable from my origional shifter. I don't even know if it would have worked with a TH400 anyway.

HELL YEAH, it worked GREAT!!! and you can't even tell from the top or side of the engine that it doesn't belong there
For those who don't know, I can't afford headers for my 472 so I ran a DeVille Driver side exhaust manifold on the pass side and did a little custom exhaust work. Saved me a few hundred dollars!!!
I get that money to ya soon Tom.
BTW I think with my sweet cam, Intake, oversize valves, and .030 over bore.....I can hang!!!

So I take it that your reverse shift shaft poppets were the cause of your loosey goosey flippy floppy (<---- how's that for tech :flipoff2: ) idler gear noise?

They are running my casting number to see if it could also be some shift-block that is on certain top covers also, but at least the general agreement is it isn't the tranny itself. If nothing else I can always go to the yard and pull a top cover for cheap and slap it on in a minute.

well i guess your not working hard enough at cheap parts!
....then again, i live in an area where 4x4's aren't remotly popular and everything rots away, so plenty of driveline parts in junkyards, for dirt cheap....including my (2) suburbans i got for free...well actually i gotta swap some parts into a friends wrecker, but hell, no money left my pocket its free.
Harvester of Sorrow 10-22-2003, 10:05 AM Woke Saturday morning with a fucking cold...spent sunday on the couch trying to fight it. Called in sick on Monday for half a day to catch up on rest.
Did buy a PS pump rebuild kit at NAPA. Hopefully this will end the spitting of fluid:rolleyes:

Under 2K, I see you figured out how to play my game. I am currently around $750 and two years into it.... I keep selling parts and bringing my numbers back down. After using parts from 5 rigs, I just about have all my parts I cab use from a Scout. Now sell the half cab and get the money for the last few parts.......

Is there a reason you can't just toss on the top cover from my T19 and give it a try?
Darel 10-22-2003, 11:41 AM Yeah...because I'm an idiot. I was trying to do three things at once on Tuesday, so to save time I figured:
1. Start draining antifreeze so I can pull rad later on
2. Start pulling off top cover and installing your top cover (believe me this was my plan all along)
3. Start pulling rad/t-stat/hoses
By the time I realized I can't run the engine without a rad, I was already radless. I can't just turn the t-case yoke because I have no clutch linkage, because my parts truck was not as complete as I thought. So, I can't spin the tranny without completely pulling it out to check your top cover, because I need to run the engine to listen for the noise but now because I'l stupid I can't run the engine.
Yeah.
Don't you love the circle of parts, how two completely opposite and not related parts always end up interconnected somehow?

scoutkid 10-22-2003, 01:33 PM Well 61scout, that DID include my new set of 37" MT/R's and 35 spline rear shafts and spool and gears and front HD44 8 lug, histeer parts (tre's most expensively) warn premium hubs, new brakes all around including new rotors, exhaust parts...... basically i rebuilt my entire truck in two weeks. I didn't know we were talkin about NET $ spent, cause i got $600 from a crazy rear D60 i had layin around, and that much or more from my SOA D44's all cut and turned and such, got a few bills out of my old 35's and so on. So in all acutality it was more like $500 out of pocket, if it weren't i would have been screwed cause i didn't have a job this summer, i just sold parts and worked on my junk:D

scoutver5.7 10-22-2003, 03:28 PM Finished welding 1/4" plate onto my diff cover. Spent a good 3 hours grinding it semi smooth (damn 7018 is hard). Now I've just gotta smooth it out with the flapper wheel, drill the holes and paint it.
Looks like my 5 year project is turning into a 10 year project.:mad:

I got all my performance parts GIVEN to me. That includes, Aluminum intake, shaft style rocker set-up, Heads were alredy done w/Stainless steel-Oversize valves, Port matched intake-to-heads-to-Exhaust (except the one I replaced)...etc...etc....
So I saved appx $2,000.00 right there in parts!!

Let's see here, Saturday I hit Harbor Freight & finally got the drill press vice grips I've wanted, as well as a 10 pac of cutoff wheels for my axle cut/turn.
Also hit Blue Collar Supply (metal stuff) & got some angle iron, bolts, & some cool plastic ball type shifter knobs (.99 cents each:) ).
The morning started with a run to PnP 1/2 price day for a new (Sag) PS Box.
Sunday, helped my father-in-law track down a short in his 66 Ford pickup..
Yesterday, I mad spacers for mounting the box, cleaned all the gue off the box, and began painting it & the pump... (now just have to fab up the linkage or have it fabbed....)...
