i've got a 95 xj 4.0 in my 87 yj. whenever i first start it up it has a slight knock untill it reaches about 160*+. other than that the engine runs like a raped ape, if i'm not careful, i'll lay a nice patch of rubber in first.

what kind of oil/filter are you running? Too light oil can cause that and i've heard frams can restrict oil pressure on startup as well.
Other than that, if it's a high mileage motor, worn oil pump, bearings, etc. Oil pump can be changed without pulling the motor sometimes.
Get a real oil pressure gause, it can tell you what kind of pressure you're running, that will help you figure out whats going on.

does it have over 100,000 miles on it? if so i does not get worse they all do it.

Mine does it too. I use 10w30.

And I have replaced the oil pump EASILY w/o pulling the motor. :rolleyes:

If it knocks when it's cold i doubt it's a bearing..

Seriously though, are there any decent trails around flagstaff? I lived there for almost 2 yrs and all I could find was forest service roads.

I have a 95xj with a 4.0. She knocks on start only the first time she fires on startup. I have run all oils from 5-30 to strait 40 with no change. Never ever had a knock besides that. Even when idiot light came on and she was running at 250* or what ever it comes on at. :confused:

i'm running castrol syntec 10w30 and a fram filter. i'm not sure how many miles it has, i bought it from a salvage yard and they didn't know. i'm about due for an oil change, any suggestions for a filter? my pressure guage reads within the specs in the manual.

If it were my Toyota my first instinct would be valvetrain and to add some oil.

I agree with Wideopen. At least leaning that way.

Piston slap's a bitch. I'd run it though and plan something newer or different.
