: Insuring your rig
Mean__Gene 10-24-2003, 12:57 PM I'm considering buying a 85 4Runner to be used totally as a trail rig. This will be to avoid beating and breaking my rather clean 88 4R DD. Besides having to pay the initial cost and maintenance of the 2nd vehicle, the only draw back i'm seeing for this move is insurance costs, so I wanted to see what all of you with trail rigs do. Do you not insure it at all and trailer it? If so, what kind of deals did you get for insuring a second vehicle and with what company? an sort of "Infrequently-Used Recreational Nonstreet Vehicle" policies?
I would consider not insuring it at all because if it total it, it would not a big enough loss to have made insurance work it. Personal injury to someone else is the only danger to not insuring [so liability would be nice], but then again, people don't insure quad bikes and dirt bikes, so what's really the difference there?
I'm interested to hear what's y'all's ideas on this are.
Thanks.

Liability, and almost NO miles. Right now its just non-op and no ins because its in pieces and im pretty sure its not moving anytime soon.
OH, and dont mention its a trail vehicle. They wont like that. If you can, just say its an 85 4runner and nothing more until they demand more info. If they learn that its a dedicated trail truck, you'd be screwed, cause then they'd know its going to be constantly damaged.
95steel 10-24-2003, 01:15 PM Thought about it, but can not get tags with out insurance. Also have to drive on public roads sometimes to get to trails, liability could save your arse if you had an accident. Just get the basic ins and as said before, tell them nothing about the vehicle unless you have to.

How did they find out you have firearms? Do you have homeowners/rental insurance with them or something?
why would the insurace company care what kind of vehicle it is if you only have liability? it seems that they wouldn't cause they wouldn't have to pay to get your truck fixed if wrecked. Just courious, cause i'm about to go through that.

Because of the potential damage your vehicle could do to another one or someone else. Ie.. a 1 ton truck could do a lot more damage than say a kia.
My insurance provider gives me a break cause my jeep isn't my dd. As long as I don't put many miles on it I get a good break. I use state farm.
Rat70FJ 10-24-2003, 03:00 PM I carry liability only on my FJ40, cause I'm concerned with the potential of injuring someone. It only costs ~$300 per year and that's for $300k/500k coverage!

I think its more of a "because they can".. And the damage potential.
Whatever you do (as others have said) DO NOT tell them it is used for trail running. I was dropped when I told them that a few years ago (like a complete dumbass; and honest dumbass but a dumbass none the less).
Get basic liability. Tell them you hardly ever drive it and leave it at that.
If you're hoping to recoup the cost of replacement should something happen by getting full coverage.....forget it. Most insurance companies have a policy stating that for a "specialized" vehicle with the type mods a trail rig would require won't be covered unless an authorized appraisal is done. This appraisal will most definitely raise your rate.
Just my experience,
Sean
Meyer 10-24-2003, 04:33 PM Question here... what if you roll in an offroad park and you get injured? Is that covered by anyone? Wouldn't state farm say forget it?

You called????:flipoff2:
tanzuki 10-24-2003, 05:51 PM I have liability with comp coverage since my rig stays out side I've got high dollar parts that would be kinda tough to replace right away on my own. I have suspended the liability coverage and I'm suppose to call if I plan on useing it so she could acttivate the liablity coverage for that weekend but I usually forget to call. It only cost me about $5 a month.

Get a gun safe and you won't ever feel the need to tell them you have guns again.
I have full coverage on both mine. Let them look at it befor you cut it up or add stuff.
1uglyranger 10-24-2003, 09:10 PM I justed changed my insurance on my trail rig cause it is now a tailer queen, and will not see any real street driving, but this is CA, and I need ins. to register, and now the rangers are checking reg on the trails:rolleyes:
I registered it as a "show car" (that was thier term not mine:D ) The truck is ugly as hell, but thats what they wanted to call it. I had to document mileage, and sign a waiver that the truck would be drivn less then 500 miles a year. (the rest on a trailer). For liabilty I am paying about $150 a year, and I have normally high rates due to a shitty driving record;)
I tried to tell them it was a "trail rig" and they didn't undderstand.... thats when they said "show car":flipoff2:
Brian--
redwilly 10-25-2003, 12:45 AM I take my state exam for auto and home insurance on Monday! Insurance company's try to put a price on the risk you propose for loss. There is plenty of room for error...Try to show little risk and don't lie!! Your policy can be completely rescinded at any time for mis representation! They just give (by law) 10 days before flat cancelling! Offroad trucks are low mileage, registerred and legitamate vehicles. Just keep within the insurance companies written guidlines and beat them at thier own game! I have my beast insured through Progressive, I was cancelled from several companies before them for my "risk". It helps to try only getting liability and not comp or collision because they ussually want a pictures if you get those. It really helps to find a good broker who's willing to "work" with you.
redwilly 10-25-2003, 12:54 AM why would the insurace company care what kind of vehicle it is if you only have liability? it seems that they wouldn't cause they wouldn't have to pay to get your truck fixed if wrecked.
Because the vehicle is a higher risk! I fiat isn't as fast as a Lamborgini! However liability is to cover you! (from getting sued in the event of a loss). The vehicle is a much smaller part of the premium on liability unless its "modified" which also could pose a risk in thier eyes. If you have CA state minimum liability 15/30 5 (i think) and you rear end a $20,000 car guess where the other $15,000 of loss gets paid, you have to..Minum liability is a dangerous thing! It makes it so people just buying it for registration, and if they really get in a wreck of any size, the requirement hasn't done its job (protecting the public)
