I have a sb 350 that I transplanted a tbi system on from a '92 camaro and also installed a quiet drive gear drive, Pete Jackson. It sometimes wont idle and will need to be restarted over and over. Would the gear drive have any effect on the knock sensor? If not what do you think could be the cause of this? It is getting better for sure, but its starting to drive me crazy.
The chip was reprogramed for a 350 versus a 305 it came off of also
Thanks in advance- Kory

Have you checked to make sure the 350 TBI unit uses the same injectors that the 305 uses?

Some early model TBI units had an idle adjustment screw. I fought a rough idleing pickup for a few days until I noticed the idle adjustment screw. I had just assumed idle was set by the computer and the IAC so I was trying everything from injectors to valves. A few simple turns later it was running perfect.
Hope it helps!

The knock sensor is just a microphone. The ESC module is a set of electronic filters that "listens" to the noise picked up by the knock sensor and try to pick up on a certain frequency of signal that it perceives as a knock. When knock is detected, it pulls a few degrees of spark out of the advance to eliminate the knock. Other sources of noise in the engine that fall within the right parameters can be perceived as knock. This is known as false knock. The only way to know for sure if your detecting any knock or false knock is to hook up to a scanner and see what the knock counts are. So, yes, it is possible that the gear drive is creating noise that the ESC module is perceiving as knock.
On another note, I personally would have to throw the BS flag at a chip that was "tuned" to run on another engine based purely on the specs of the engine. Someone can program a chip that'll get the car running and maybe even running well, but it is NOT "tuned" until you start logging data from the engine/ECM combo and use that to modify the chip. Then you log more data, burn another chip, log data, burn, log, burn, etc. etc. until you dial in the calibration specific to THAT engine/ECM combo. Then it's "tuned". I know you didn't state that the chip was tuned to your 350, I just wanted to state the difference and what it takes to dial in the calibration.

I THINK EDELBROCK HAS A GEAR DRIVE THAT WILL NOT EFFECT THE KNOCK SENSOR :flipoff2:

hey torc- i think tha ti read it could but before i do anything get the codes read on it and tune it (the chip) and go from there...
thanks

You need more than just a code scanner.... you need something that can monitor the active ALDL data stream from the ECM with the engine running. A "code" is short for error code and the ECM will only set an error code if it registers a malfunction. Since the knock sensor registering knock is not an error, no code will be set. By monitoring the ALDL data, you can see when/if knocks are being registered.
Tuning the chip takes someone with the equipment to monitor and log the ALDL data, read the calibration from the chip, use the logged data to modify the calibration, erase the chip and burn the new profile onto it.

Got a laptop? If not, a cheap older one can be picked up off ebay for little to nothing. You don't need one with blazing speed. The software is freeware off the 'net. You can get a UV eraser for around $50 or and a chip programmer for around $100 (some more... some less). So you can have all the equipment needed for $200 or under. Then just search the web, read, join EFI tuning BB's and ask questions.
