I'm deciding whether to go with 4.56's or 4.88's on my FJ40, using an ARB locker.

How much weaker are the 4.88's than the 4.56's from a practical standpoint, especially given you have to grind the 4.88 ring gear to fit the ARB. Breakage is usually at the pinion?

In practice will the 4.88's have a much greater liklihood of breakage.

The only grinding you have to do is to the ring gear to fit the cross pin in, and it is not much. I loved my 4.88, and would do it again. Yes the weak point is the pinon.

Jimmy is right, when the pinon angle starts to move the chances of breaking are increased.
