Ok, this is top secret... So camo and H8Monday, quit reading this now. :flipoff2:
I am going to put screws through the beads of my "race car" (90 Corolla) in hopes of keeping the tires on the rims under HEAVY dirt track cornering..... My question to you guys is, what size self tappers do you think I should use, and how many per wheel. Keep in mind the tires are 13"ers. ;)

Why not full the tires with silicone or something?? Expanding foam?? Doesn't have to last long (long enough to kick everyone elses ass and get crushed right??)

We did this to our camaro years ago down at Watsonville speedway. Just put a small bead of silicone around the bead before you seat the tire and then use 1/4" sheetmetal screws every 2" along the rim. The photo in the post above looks good however we found that the screws going in from the inside of the rim straight into the thick part of the tire had a tendency to puncture the tire at lower pressure. I guess we could have used shorter screws though.:D

I always used 8 screws per rim (outside only). That was for drag racing though. I would say 12 would be fine. The hard part is making sure you don't drill through the rim and the complete bead. The trick is to just drill through enough of the bead for the screw. If you drill all the way through the bead, you will have to tube it to keep it from leaking.
Then air it down to 8psi and GET IT AWN!

I know some guys were putting short screws in the tread too for ice racing. That might work on dirt for crappy tires!

Jeez, it seems like it would be next to impossible to keep from going all the way through the bead when working with a little 185/13..... How thick can the bead be on a little tire like that? I guess I need to debead one and take a look...

1/4" sheetmetal zip screws probaly would work, you will have to drill a piolot hole for them though

I didnt read the post because, afterall, it is "Top Secret".
But if I would have read it, I would have suggested that you drill, all the way through, from one side of the rim to the other, and run some 1/4 inch hex bolts all the way, and through bolt them on the inside. This way it will hold the tire on the wheel on both beads.:flipoff2:
Yeah,..Whatever!!
