: ROUGH model of my tube chassis... critique away
foley 10-27-2003, 09:21 PM Alright,
I made a basic start at modeling my intended tube chassis in PRO/E.
Intended specs:
It'll get a 1958 CJ5 tub draped over it, and hold a 4.3, 700R4, 3.8 Atlas, Ford 44 and 9", turning either 37's or 40's, depending on how much effort I want to put into the 44 (like D60 outers).
Intended wheelbase is 106-108"
So here's the start. I haven't decided on all the cross bracing yet, or how I am going to integrate the winch mount / stinger into it, so ideas are welcome. Winch will be my tried and true M8000.
Rear lower links will mount to the back of the belly pan (only one tube modelled). The front will run a TJ long arm style suspension, with the links mounted a little bit forward and inboard of the base of the A pillars.
I haven't decided yet on Coils or coilovers, money will be the determining factor, and the rear almost looks like a 1/4 eliptic setup may be simpler than either one.

CA_YJ 10-28-2003, 12:12 AM Will it hold the weight of the motor??:flipoff2:
You might want to add a few bars up front. One good hit and that thing looks like it will collapse. I'm not saying make a jungle gym, but give it a brace or two. Also I dig the jeep roots
Starslope 10-28-2003, 12:36 AM Will need alot of tube, but you're getting there :D
What software are you using?

Jeep roots.... A CJ5 was the first vehicle I ever wanted to own, I figured at 25 years old, single, and with every other toy known to man, it was about time!
Yeah, The triangulation on the front is going to support the mounts for some combination of coils / shocks, coilovers, and a steering box / tracbar mount (hydro assist only) .
I'm not sure yet how I want all that to look, so I haven't filled it in yet, but I'm open to suggestons.
The same goes for the rear, it still needs some detail added, but it'll get a shock hoop and probably a 1/4 eliptical spring mount integrated with the chassis.

I'm gonna date myself here... Pro/E 2000 i (STUDENT ED!) It's been a couple years since I gradgiated
brainless 10-28-2003, 06:45 AM on your main hoop and windshield hoop i would remove the llittle bend in the middle straight tube is much stronger then bent tube
looks to me like it might fold up there

good point.... I hadn't thought of that. I was going to run an inverted "V" support in the middle of the windshield (like the attached photo), which I think would have helped some.
I really need to keep it curved to make the cage align with the windshield frame. The B hoop can be flat on top, and the A hoop will have the V brace. Think that'll be good enough, or do I need to just suck it up and let the Windshield frame not match the shape of the cage perfectly?
Thanks for the input guys
foley 10-28-2003, 09:44 AM some more of my idea:
Mieser 10-28-2003, 01:00 PM That is a really good start! I love CAD sometimes, other times I want to kick the computer across the room....

I'm finally diving in! :)
Mieser 10-28-2003, 01:44 PM That CAD project was a hard one...but the learning curve is steep. I am in the middle of totally redesigning most everything to clean up the design and deal with some weight issues.
I have been trying to figure out how to eliminate some of the more complex bends. Right now you would almost HAVE to do most of the main frame with a CNC bender.
My advice is to eliminate as many complex bends as possible. Then when you get the design like you want, go back through and see if you can make every tube do at least three things. I ended up planning on using a lot of 1" straight tube in my design to keep things a little lighter. It still ended up looking like a jungle gym, but I would be very ok with taking a hard multiple roll in it.
I hope I get a little more time in the future to keep working on my project....
foley 10-28-2003, 09:52 PM Well, with the help of the folks here I've got it pretty well figured with the necessary dimensions of the front lower framerails. They need to be no more than 28" wide to prevent the possibility of the tires rubbing them under articulation and steering.
SOOOO
I can start laying out the basic framework of the chassis this weekend. Once I have the basics layed out, and the tub cut to fit over the chassis, I'll get started on all the component placement, etc.
Look for more detailed models and / or pics coming soon to a computer near you (unless I get coersced into partying all weekend and forget to fab :)
Thanks for all the input guys
