View Full Version : How do you "rough" it when camping?

I'm sure we have all come up with various ways to enjoy creature comforts while camping. This is us this past weekend enjoying the TPP video that RocknZJ produced. Used a laptop and projector onto a white quilt :D Projector was giving us problems so we eventually had to just deal with using the laptops screen :) Oh and we were enjoying pina coladas we had mixed up while watching

Feh. Portable electronics have ruined camping.

Every time I see a clan of teenagers or yuppies at an adjacent campground, I secretly yearn for a sudden violent downpour to douse all their loud radios and TVs and computer crappolla.

Maybe I could train a pack of skunks to associate the smell of ozone and polystyrene with food.

I was getting ready to tell you about leeping under my truck.

or going out for a weekend with little more than a fishing pole and bed roll.

You take that much? I prefer taking nothing but a 30 pack, and a roll of toilet paper.

I slept in the bed of the pickup under a tarp, far easier than a tent.

Yes I've done my share of primitive camping, we can have a thread on that if you all would like. This thread is about some of the innovative ways people have come up with to bring the comforts of home with you

Damn some of you people take this too seriousley...guess its only cool if you have an old couch and are blowing shit up in the dessert

Roughing it:

Drinking VO instead of Crown.
Having to choke down rib-eyes instead of tenderloins.

if i let my wife pack, we'd always be [quote on] "roughing it" [quote off]. but since i do most of the packing and i constantly dog her about what she takes, saying it'll weigh us down too much since i don't have much ground clearance as it is and that it'll cause the suspension to sag, we usually carry just enough to be roughing it (no quotes). i can't stand watching someone out in the woods with all their electronic crap going, but funny story: i was in Moab last year and this old guy across the campground from us had the oldest FJ with no lift and rusted to hell, a home-made camper trailer and a tow rig that looked like he just towed it outta the bone yard, not to mention he looked like he just crawled outta the bone yard. he was all alone and looked like he was a true woodsman. later that nite i saw a glow from across the way and looked up to see his silhouette in his homemade camper window, sitting indian-style on his homemade bed TYPING ON A LAPTOP!

roughing it?

Anywhere it'll fit, the 19' camper goes with us, someday it'll get replaced with a 35+foot fifth wheel.

Other than that, a tent, air mattress, portable heater.

Any more roughing it than that, something went wrong and I'm sleeping in the drivers seat for a 15 minutes nap before driving again.

Now that I have a girlfriend that comes with me on trips things are a little different. I used to be to lazy to set up a tent and only brought a bedroll and a sleeping bag and sleep next to the fire. Now I have a dome tent with an air mattress. It's kinda nice to come back from a full day/night of wheeling and have something comfortable to sleep on.

Hitch-hiking/camping around Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming for 3 months (October, November, December) with snow blowing sideways, just me and my backpack of gear, well, I call that roughing it. :D

Tounge in cheek roughing it? I do early 1800s historical reenaction so things are a tad more "primitive" than the average...

kitchen match instad of flint and steel to light the fire.

Dish soap instead of creek sand to wash with.

Air mattress instead of douglas fir needles under the blankets.

Finally toilet paper instead of pine forest duff... The last one the wife absolutely insists on when she goes... :D

I stay in Eric and Rose's motorhome so that Rose and I can sit inside with the air conditioning on while we eat ice cream and brownies at the Hammers :D :roxy:

The front seat of my truck does just fine for me when it's cold, or the bed with a sleeping bag. A bunch of my buddies and I were camping over in Eastern Washington, a couple tents but mostly just people sleeping in/under their trucks and we see a guy rolling through the area where we were camping at- 40 something foot trailer pulling a new H2. Of course we all started making fun of this tool, until he pulled up next to us and parked that pig. Turned out he was friends with some of my buddies. We stopped laughing at him when it was 115 in the shade and he had air conditioning. ;)

I've learned to scale down the amount of stuff I bring, cept my kitchen. I usually eat better while camping that when eating at home (quality).

DieLucas!
10-28-2003, 10:45 AM
I usually follow the traditional model...

tent and sleeping bags...
2 Coleman stoves, potatoes, eggs, BACON
Whatever we can grill/cook over the fire for the other 2 meals a day
A couple of niceties...a propane lantern and a catalytic heater.

If you don't wake up with a sore back, neck, and shoulders...you isn't camping...

I have to agree that all of this junk people drag out when they camp. They think they are all the shit, yet everyone around them just thinks "Shit! Where did those idiots come from?".

We camp with what we like, and little more. We sit around the camp fire and have a good time and enjoy the area. We leave the crap we use at home like DVD's at HOME! We are trying to have a good time, not pass time.

Keep camping pure and you will enjoy it a lot more. Same goes for wheeling.

Funny..we started out with the 4 people we had in our little group and once the rockcrawling videos started about 10 more gathered around us. We weren't just passing time..we were enjoying ourselves.

Now it may also be important to remember we weren't out in the middle of some national park, we were in the middle of a ranch field trying not to trip over rocks and fall in a cactus in the dark, so its not like we were ruining the tranquility.

Finally..just what is "pure", bit open for interpretation isn't it? Is a gas stove pure? an air mattress, foam bedroll? Hell what about a thinsulate winter mummy bag? One persons pure is another persons luxury.

Cripes..I started this thread off as a goof..we got a little crazy this past weekend and had fun with electronics and now the camp nazis swoop down.

Phil is right..the funnay has definitely been drained from this place

Older I get the less I like tenting.

3 years ago I built the redneck camper / cargo trailer. Grab the spare twin bed from one of the kids trundle beds. Has 12v lighting and fans. Made an attached Canopy for it as well.

Feb we inherited a 1959 Airstream I'm now restoring for when the family goes.

Lap top will be coming on family trips. It will function as a navigation tool for cross country runs. DVD will keep my daughters entertained while we roll. Also going to real time the tow rig through the ALDL port.

TV I still haven't made a decision on. We will be going out for 2 weeks at a time. My only interst in the TV is News and weather.

Its my bro's machine he got it from a 7-11 that was closing (used to only make slurpees)

Thats only one side, it has two tanks and can make whatever you could dream up (jack & coke, rum & coke, vodlka and juce, etc)
In that pic you could see we mixed up a gallon of vodlka, half a bottle of tokillya and a gallon of hawaiian punch, tasted goo and the girls really loved it!

Everybody has their own opinion on "roughing it" and some people's "roughing it" is going to a hotel without room service. We all have differnt tastes and expectations on what we like and what we like to do when we're camping. Like my earlier post, I didn't mind my buddy coming up in his motor home when it was 115 degrees!! Now that margarita mixer... I really wouldn't mind having that!!! You all seen the gas powered blenders?!

Sorry just didn't find the funnay , well funny.

I love the hammock shot.

I still think people are missing out when they hotel it. The fun is at the gruop gathering around the fire. But a shower is damn nice to have.

Maybe it is just me, but I love getting away from town and enjoying the outdoors. I seek it out, rather then try to hide from it.

Most of the best times that I've ever have has been around a fire camping somewhere. Our group of friends don't need much, just a whole lot of beer and me to bring the food. Our camping trips are the kind of trips where you pass out where you fall or curl up in your truck. Huh... rednecks!! :flipoff2:

roughin it for me would be,

Hmmm.....last time Chris and me went camping we brought an inflatable mattress AND a feather mattress to go on top of that ......

Ahh....Good Times... :)

Time before that it was a tent on the ground and a backpack full of gear... REAL Camping!!

For the Rubicon and Fordyce I stayed in a 2-person tent, had some foam to lay on, sleeping bag, ice chest, lots of snack foods, and the coleman grill was the luxury item.:goofball: It's nice at the Rubicon since when you camp by Spyder Lake you can somewhat take a bath in it but at Fordyce I was fawked. Thank gawd I had my hair in two braids or I would have been on the road to having dreads with all of that dusty dirt flying around and the muddy Meadow Lake (that I couldn't really take a bath in), near our campsite.:p

Heh... I got so damn cold one night last winter when I was coon hunting over here that I crawled in the dog box... helluva lot warmer to sleep in then the single cab Yota with a heater that went out that morning! You'd think we'd stop hunting when it was 3 degrees or so and no heater...
