my parents have a 77 scout that they are willing to GIVE me to save it from the rust. the only thing i know about the drive train is that its a 4 cyl and 4spd. can you guys give me some educated guesses about what tranny/case/axles may be under it. also any info about the motor and any common problems with it. i am looking at driving this thing from cape cod MA to atlanta with only a few days of prep/maintenance for the trip. oh yeah, only 45000 orig miles on it.
thanks guys, looking forward to branching out from the jeeps ive got into international territory.

Possibly a wide, Mandera's was, with 4.10's (very possible with the 4-popper)

Tom and Mark can probably atone to it better, since both of their Scouts started out 4-cyl trucks, but I would expect the drive to be good, but slow. The 4-bangers are good motors, but a little (:D) under powered for a 4K Scout. If you have 4.10's and stock tires, get a cheap tach and keep it under 3-3.5K, your top speed will be under the posted limit, but with an un-known motor, sustained high rpm is not a good idea, top service RPM is only about 4K.

Do a full fluids change, oil, tranny, t-case, diffs(s), wheel bearing pack and brake inspection would be good as well, check u-joints. Look for bad/cracked hoses ect, maybe pick up some spares. Gas.

If you have time, get a service manual, helpful for your pre-flight check as well if you run into anything on the drive.

make and adventure of it, take your time, see some sights and bring a buddy (or two) (or S.O. ;)) Welcome to the addiction.... :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Like said before, the axles are probably dana 44's unless they've been swapped.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the transmission is probably the t-19 close ratio. The wide is a possibility, but not too likely unless someone swapped it in. (Same reason most diesles didn't get the wide box. First too low, second too high...)

With stock sized tires (235-75r15's) and 3.54's my little 196 would cruise 65-70 all day. It was a little slow on the hills. :p
