: Kinda OT but related computer Q (tech pages problem) - tech content too

I have been working really hard lately on my Hybrid axle article and 4 steering articles.

I like to use a lot of graphics, and when I do use thumbnails they are still pretty big, because I know when i find a good page, i like to use IE 5.0 "save as complete web page" functionality, so I can save the whole thing and view it later with graphics imbedded. As such, the pages take a long time to load, and if you have slow dial up like I do, the page "times out" before it loads completely, leaving you with a bunch of little red Xs where the graphics should be, You can load them by "right clicking" and choosing "show picture" from the pop up menu - but that is a major PITA and not all my viewers will know this, and I don't want to answer hundreds of e-mails saying "the pictures don't work".

So - does anyone know a workaround? Is there a setting that can be changed? This way, I could at least post instructions.

can someone with fast connection also check my Hybrid Axle article, link in index at:

(sorry about the "cover page" - but I haven't figured how to move and retain the hit counter, and I admit I egotistically like seeing how many have viewed the page - it's neat to see all the different countries)

and let me know if it all loads ok

Much more to come.

Thanks all

Bill

There is some good stuff there and I like all the info, but a little more compression on the Thumbs cut there size in half!

Here is your compression:

Bill I have been checking out your page and man o man Jpg compression is needed on a lot of your photos.

This one is 90K on your site, here it is at 20K

DRM - the link may be getting overloaded as I posted my question in about a bazillion places- doh!

Old Scout - Damn, I never thought about that - I just re-sized, but I guess I should have adjusted the "quality" setting too....doh!

Oh well, only about 120 thumbs total to re-compress and re-upload.

And uploading to TRIPOD is a major PITA!

Oh well......

Old Scout - what do you use to compress? Photopoint, and choose "save a copy" and then bump the quality number down? How low to go? It defaults to 5 (out of 10) and that's what I'd been choosing!

I use MS Photo Editor, it came with office 2000. It has a slide scale on JPG compression. I have it set and locked 25-35% and things look pretty good most of the time. HTH

go to download.com and do a search for image optimize or image editors. You can get programs that will batch compress all your images at once, or automatically make thumbnails or whatever you want.
